A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

They do hit the frame on 1 and 4. The shorter, dumpier version is the one to go for.

So, what do you believe the GS stands for on our beloved steeds?

Was sent to train on how to service them by Suzuki GB back in the day when I was a sprog. A long time ago and I can't remember very much - we never had a single one come in to the workshop.

So, what do you believe the GS stands for on our beloved steeds?

I didn't know that Bazzer cut his teeth on a GS1000; thought he'd already won a race or two before then... And I always thought that the GS1000 was based on the 750, not an MV (unless the MV was running with a Z1 engine in it...). Sloppy article, though I did always think it was Grand...

    Carb boots

I bought some from this seller for a GS1000 a while back and they've been fine. The came postage via Australia for some unexplained reason and there was no duty payable (may have been why). Took a couple of weeks or so to arrive.

    GS550E Urethane Rubber Boot Casting

    The rubbers from a 750 won't fit - they're much bigger.

Are you sure it's petrol coming out of the pipe and not water? You'll get quite a lot of condensation coming out until she's well and truly warm.

I keep forgetting so this thread has served as a reminder. Paid just now - keep up the good work.

Hi Andy. The pipes will bolt straight on (they are the same) and the mph speedo will plug in with no mods. Good luck tracking down a decent set of original exhausts.

    1980 GS1000s - will not tick over

Technically I'm a Jock - born on the south bank of the Tay. But raised down here in sunnier climes from age 3 (my dad's home county, he married a real heathen....or I suppose with my 'ampshoier accent, an 'eathen). Apart from when the Welsh speak in their native tongue, the 2 accents I find...

    1980 GS1000s - will not tick over

The King (or Queen) would never use the word 'nowt'. It's a word with its roots buried in the heathen north... though some of them also use the word 'owt' which means 'anything' but in this context means the same thing. That's if you can understand the accent.:D

    Drilled or slotted rotor(s) for a 550?

They fit. As do the slotted discs from the later 850s and the first generation 16v 750s and 1100s.

Hard to find, even in the day..

Where did you get the photo of the lass on the S? She used to go out with a mate of mine around 1980 (it's not his bike, he had an 850G). I only knew her nickname - Jim Baines (after a TV soap character she most definitely did not resemble). Small world I suppose. Anyway, OT, the S came out of...

86 GS850G top end tapping - any advice please?

Agree with Steve - that doesn't sound like cam walk to me. I'd pull the cam cover, check the valve clearances plus cam chain tension and look for loose cam bucket as well. If you lean the bike on one side does the noise go away?

    Valve adjustment procedure

You're on the right lines. The feeler gauge should just fit with slight drag between the shim and the cam. Also worth checking if the shims spin at all - that shows that although the clearance is below the minimum spec there is som clearance. Plus make sure you follow the manual to set the cam...

No dynojet kit available for 77-79 GS750

Depending on what set up your bike came with as standard (the 750s had some slight differences depending on engine number) you'll need to move the clip on the needle down one or two positions and up the main jet to somewhere around 115 / 120. You should be ok with the standard pilot jets but may...
