A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Coils wired backwards

It does not really matter. wymple suggests that it matters to the plugs, but you have to realize that the coil is in the middle of the high-voltage circuit. That means that on one of the two plugs, the spark will go from the center tip to the extended tang, but the other plug will have the...

    towing a trailer

No, just mounted "normally", much like the picture that Gustov shows. Just the same as if you have a trailer behind your car. :-k Some states do not require trailer license plates. Others that DO have plates might have annual renewal, others 2- or 5-year renewals, some are even permanent...

    towing a trailer

When I got my first trailer (in 1978), I talked with a guy that said NOT having a swivel hitch saved his trailer. :-k He hit something with the left trailer wheel that tipped the trailer up. When the hitch bound, there wasn't enough momentum in the trailer to flip the bike, so the bike...

    towing a trailer

I have never had a commercial "swivel hitch" on any of my trailers. To answer your question, I could put the bike on the side stand (so it's leaning a bit to the left), then lift the left-side trailer wheel far enough for the trailer body to touch the ground on the right. WAY more than enough...

    towing a trailer

Steve, reporting for duty, Sir! :encouragement: Red, you have two options in my opinion. 1. Look for a (MUCH) lighter trailer. 2. Find a different tow vehicle. Sorry, but there is no practical or safe way to tow a trailer that heavy with a bike. (Not sure I would even consider that with a...

    Starter relay wiring

The ground might actually be the mounting ears, not the screw you show. As Rich and Rick mention, the connection to the starter button is the yellow/red wire that is hanging below the solenoid. On a GS, that is actually yellow/green, so that is not a GS solenoid. No worries, they all pretty...

Does gs 750L carbs fits on a te 550E?

Yes, they are both BS32, but the spacing between carbs 2 and 3 is different. It's possible to change, but not easily, as you need to change the throttle shaft(s), "choke" linkage, fuel fitting and mounting rails. The bodies themselves are also ever so slightly different. The size and location...

    GS650 grease point

Your swingarm pivots are tapered roller bearings. Quite a bit more durable than the needle bearings in the chain-driven bikes. At some time during the ownership of each of my bikes (all shafties, if you notice my signature), I have had the swingarm bearings out for inspection and re-packing...

Pro Rebuilt Carbs, New Plugs, New Petcock, New Vacuum line - starving for fuel

It might not be vacuum, it could be PRESSURE in the bowls. :-k Along that line of thought, what is the status of the carb vents? A surprising number of new owners don't understand where all the hoses go, and frequently get them wrong. .

    No headlight, no tail light.

Don't just watch it, ... REPLACE IT. .

    '82 shocks compatability

Check the bottom mount. The 850 shocks have eyes at both ends, some 750s are eye/fork. .

Who knows anything about this topcase

I have one of those cases on an 850L that is about to be sold. I will look at the electrical connections before it leaves here. .

Fuel leaking down the fuel tap to tank screws

I would say they are 6mm, as they fit on 6mm bolt. If your local hardware store does not have much metric, get a 1/4" washer. .

Who knows anything about this topcase

Yes, that is a KG top case. They also made hard saddlebags, but what everyone knows them for is the luggage rack and its optional sissy bar. .

    81 gs 450 t. Choke position

Where did you find an '81 GS with points? :-k As far as I know, all GSes sold in the US had electronic ignition, starting with the 1980 model. .

Delkevic Exhaust - I just installed another set and the fit is awesome.

I have a 4-into-1 of unknown origin on my 850G and my son has a MAC Tri-Y on his 1000G. Neither one of them has to be removed for oil changes. .

GS1000 crash bars will fit GS850?

If the 1000 is a shaftie, yes. If it's chain-driven, probably not. .

    gudgeon pin circlips

Usually, it's even more expensive to NOT get genuine washers. :-k That's because you will likely have to do it over, and get the genuine washers that you should have gotten the first time. .

    81 gs 450 t. Choke position

I believe that pushing the lever down does engage the "choke". How long have you had this bike and/or how much do you know of its history? If it starts without the "choke", something is probably wrong. If it does not idle, it's likely the carbs need to be cleaned. Not too many of us within...
