A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Sandy, I like the Cortech soft bags. How long have you used them? And what brand/model is the bag on top the seat? Thanks.

    that #*&!@ choke plunger

Looking at his photo, the lifter is installed correctly and he said they're all installed the same way.

Should I switch out pod filters for intake plenum?

Pod filters and a stock exhaust are a poor flow match. You don't get near the extra HP at higher rpm's. A waste of time performance-wise. You said you favor low and mid-range power anyway, so a stock intake would be best for you. I agree with others that if the bike has been re-jetted correctly...

    that #*&!@ choke plunger

I've found on these carbs that the "fork" mentioned must be carefully installed. It must be positioned just right as you tighten the Philips screws tip into the choke shaft's V groove. Tight, but be careful to not over tighten. Then double check the choke plunger movement and compare all 4 for...

    gas tank issue

I assume your tank holds 5 gallons or very close to it? I also assume you typically hit reserve with approximately 1 gallon remaining on a level road? You rode 10 miles after going on reserve. If you actually used only 3.1 gallons total then that suggests the tank went on reserve after burning...

    Motorcycle Camping Advice

Like others said, I'd research the actual costs of hotels along the way. You might find that the hotels are worth the extra cost when you consider tent set up and take down several times, safety, being able to shower if you like and having a TV to see weather reports ahead. Maybe a compromise of...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I'm glad you decided against crossing the water, Redman. Water can be very deceiving, besides slippery. I guess it's human nature to want to try something even though it's dangerous. In the situation you showed, the payoff isn't worth the risk. Imagine your bike laying on its side and you're...

    1980 GS1000G - Smoke at start-up - should I buy?

I bought my '79 GS1000E new and I've been through the leaking valve guide seal thing two times. From my experience, the less you ride the bike, the sooner the stock seals will harden and the cold start smoking will increase over time. Eventually it will smoke all the time. My original seals...

    some pingel info

I replaced the stock petcock on my '79 GS1000E with a Pingel about 20 years ago. My bike also holds 5 gallons and hits reserve with approximately 1 gallon remaining. It's been the same with the stock petcock and the Pingel. If I was riding on a long uphill or downhill, that would effect when it...

This makes me so thankful for my GS

Jeez. The Commando's, along with the Interstate and others, were complete garbage. The Commando was produced for 11 years and many of it's worst first year problems still existed in the last year, showing how the British learn from mistakes. It vibrated ridiculously. Can you imagine vibration...

    Seals Questions

By the way, the APE valve guide seals were recommended by Rapidray, a respected member here who has done a lot of engine work, including my valve job/cylinder work. Maybe you can look him up or find another member near you to help you work on your bike?

    Seals Questions

More work, I know, but replacing all the seals is what I'd do. It would suck to do only some of the seals and see it leak upon start up or soon after. Those seals have hardened and not been exposed to hot/cold expansion. Also, I may be wrong, but the factory seals are still made of a rubber...

    Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all.

Might be a little early but I'm heading down to So. Cal' to be with my family and won't be around my computer for awhile. I hope you all have a great Christmas/Holiday this year!:) Cherish every moment.

    Stripped A/F screw

I've removed a couple of stripped screws this way: take a very small punch with a sharp tip, place it near the outer edge of the screw but not contacting the carb body, hold the punch straight up and tap the punch several times with a moderate/firm force. Don't let the punch tip move. Hit it a...

Back in the classic saddle baby

It's nice to have a classic and something newer. I still have my '79 GS1000E since new and my 2007 ZX14 since new. Best of both worlds. Enjoy your bikes.:)

"Pure gas". How long does it stay good?

Thanks for the replies. I hope I won't gum up the carbs again and I won't have to deal with this again. I've had the bike 39 years and I don't doubt I'll still have the bike another 20 years (if I live that long). As long as the Z1 aluminum fittings last, I'll be good. Chuck, same here. If ever...
