A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

merely curiousities...and there's nothing I know particularly bad with a Series type.....It's just that when people say things like "too much power shunted to R/R" I can't help thinking, "but If you run your heated vest and handlebar grips all winter, what difference is that from "shunting"? I...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Later, when headlamps were legislated to Always On, Suzuki just put a jumper on at the connector to the headlight switch rather than redoing their factory harness. It's a bit odd but it allowed them to keep using the same R/R too. In and of itself, electrically, it shouldn't matter-like an...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

um..couple of points of "curiousity ". Empirically, nobody with Series R/Rs has complained about losing stators this way but per It's not the voltage that kills stators, it's the current." I'm going to say, "that is, depending on the quality of the insulation". because shutting the stator's...

77 GS400 more ignition point troubles

Your points MUST interrupt power to the coils...simply, test that they do with probes each side-with an ohmeter (power off) with a simple 12volt "test bulb" (power on) . The way you have the insulation washers on may be the key point here...

    Comparing a GS650 to GS850, 750, 550 etc…

Where Honda would build an entirely new bike, Suzuki would tweak the look using the same frame and engine. They are definitely "UJM" if the definition of UJM is :"Uses Stanley parts" :)

    Comparing a GS650 to GS850, 750, 550 etc…

Shaft drives generally lose power versus chains because they have to twist the engines output 90 degrees...coming from a cb500 you might consider that as not much of an upgrade. Plus, 4 cylinder bikes are not especially known for low RPM torque though crank timing might play into that bit of...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Yes this suits most people. And Shindegnen makes a good product whichever type you prefer *....The actual physics going on is much more complicated...and I have a lot of stuff I could spew but won't. Still, one cogent question I repeatedly ask is -what is the actual saving in heat? What IS this...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Rob, yes... on newer alternators, there's actually a little solid state unit inside them that regulates by controlling the magnetic field of the rotor. This then controls the stator's output... Motorcycles usually? (my Yamaha 650 had a car-type alternator ) have permanent magnet rotors so...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Here's something you will like,suzukian...it's what was on one of member trevor's bike when he bought it...homemade with just the bridges you were mentionioning...I was sad he immediately took it off...:) gotta love the "voltage divider"? on the scr

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

...well, no, not exactly "bathed in oil"-it's just a drip from the shaft to keep it lubricated. "Cooling" ,I think not, but it likely contributes to the crust and discolouration that's seen on Suzuki stators....

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

AND here's the R/R diagram for Suzuki twins and maybe more- a single scr...(from the manual) ..maybe, quite a lot of work for one scr...? Anyone can goto a motorcycle forum and check out the "hotspot" of complaints to figure out the weak points of whatever old bike they're considering, IF you...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

here's a honda R/R sh232 or 238 or the like on many other bikes...It ddoesn't show the circuit feeding the gates of the scrs but it's going to be similar to the diagram above...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

Nessism ...um... Suzuki's ND R/Rs were different than most...here's the diagram from my 650 manual... note there are only two scrs...the good ol' "common type has 3 scrs -one for each leg. (also note the "darlington" to up the current to the scrs' gates...haha I did try to mention there's a...

    Comparing a GS650 to GS850, 750, 550 etc…

I had a 650. Likeable not perfect. The cam walks-tonktonktonk...the shaft drive can fail at the secondary and on the hub.....and that aside, I always wished it had 6 gears...at 70mph on a flat road, it was a natural (but missing) reflex...I had the same urge on a Honda GL500..which I might add...

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

BOTH can be used in "shunt" types OR "series" types. The acronyms refer to the components that redirect current ("shunt") or interrupt current (''series" ...which is easy to understand as a kind of off/on relay on the path of current...very much like the mechanical relays that controlled the...

    GS1000e frontfork springs length

It might be you have a GS1000S These have 350mm springs... but that's just a wild guess because I have that manual and not the actual bike. or Maybe someone swapped springs in for some reason because(for what it's worth) a 66mm "creep" on a fork spring is something I have never seen

    Pic of the week game

steve murdoch for me but it was 51/49 with Redman which has that "fall feel"...the temperatures of the changing world are just not the same this year...The trees here aren't getting the time to change their colours and drop their leaves.

    Stater and Reg/Rect problems on 82 GS650Ez

You should check your stator for output - a new r/r won't fix a shorted stator ....and There's lots of info on the "series" type R/R here on the site but ...I've been using the Honda ones from your list on all my Suzukis (and Hondas) without any problems..had one one my '82 GS650 too. It was...

Looking for help on wires from gauge cluster 1982 GS450GA

I only have an "Owners" manual for these 450 GAs I think they have neutral indicator lamp? That might well be the Green/yellow stripe. OR possibly OIL light. Green/White is "likely" kickstand light, looking at the diagrams I have for various 450s...Too bad there isn't a shop manual for these...

    Removing old points 77 GS400

No. You're not understanding. use the screwdriver as a wedge between the mount and the side of the little bolt's head. This will substitute for a tiny wrench in cases where a larger wrench can't fit and there's something to wedge against....
