A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Plastic floats?

The only GS that I'm aware of that had a brass float was the early twins. Those carbs are different from the later type that had a foam/plastic float. If the float is caved in, try a heat gun to warm it. The air inside will expand and might pop out any dents.

Scored a free 'kegerator' - any brewers here?

Did the home brew a couple different times. Last time, my buddies decided they wanted something more exotic, so they made a batch of mead. Used a glass Sparklets water bottle. I checked out at this point, because the last thing I needed was something more potent than homemade beer. Anyway...

    Decoding part number

O-rings are commonly sized ID x thickness. You want a little stretch, so the O-ring ID needs to be a smig smaller than the groove it fits into. Maybe 1-2mm for a 62mm O-ring? something like that. To figure thickness, you need to measure the mating O-ring groove, which in this case, will be...

Check my signature for the newbie mistakes thread, carb rebuild thread, and a link to fresh O-rings. If you can't see my signature, be sure that "view signatures" is turned ON, in your forum profile. While our GS bikes are some of the best ever made, they are 45 years old now, and need some...

Measure the size yourself, chuck. And research. Nitrile is not good for brake fluid. You need EPDM

62mm ID or OD? What material? What O-ring thickness? Why not just order the OEM part and avoid these questions?

    '81 Fuel Hose Size?

The Suzuki fuel line is fine for common E10 gasoline. You are assuming too much. It's all I use, even on my Kawasaki. And speaking of that, a bunch of guys on KZ Rider are using the Suzuki fuel line after my recommendation, and excellent in-use reviews. Automotive fuel line comes in inch...

    '81 Fuel Hose Size?

Check Partzilla for the PN's. You can order from your local Suzuki dealer also. The OEM fuel line is really excellent. 7mm ID. Much better than line from the auto parts store.

    First road bike - 1982 GS550L

Dude, I wrote that instruction tutorial. I'm trying to help, but you have to read what's there. Reducing the thickness of the plastic spacer on top of the needle clip results in a richer mixture. Old plastic spacer can be sanded down or replaced with a washer stack thinner than original spacer.

Anyone Get A Cortizone Injection ?

Old age, and accumulated injuries, suck, man! If I could take a shot, and avoid pain, I'd camp out to be first in line! Cortizone is pre-school level medicine. Why are we even discussing it here? Take the shot, and see if it helps. If not, don't get another.

    First road bike - 1982 GS550L

Go back and reread what I wrote. You are free to do what you want, but increasing jet sizes is not needed, and to lift the needle, you don't want to add washers under the needle clip.

    Valve cover gasket source recommendation

Man, that sucks! Freaking Suzuki is abandoning us! Critical parts like gaskets are being discontinued! NOOOOO! Your concern about the tach gear is a good one. Is it a problem in the real world? I don't know. I'd be keeping a net out for an OEM gasket, though. Sadly, the same problem...

    Lithium Ion batteries combusting?

Li batteries have different charging requirements compared to flooded batteries. If I'm not mistaken, the charge voltage is lower, so you should use a special R/R. Between the cost of the battery and a new R/R, one would have to ask the question, "is it worth it?" My view: buy an AMG battery...

    First road bike - 1982 GS550L

For reasons unknown, the 550's are more cold-blooded than many other GS bikes. Be sure to change the intake boot O-rings, and maybe the boots themselves, if you haven't already done so. Also, go through the carbs, using the tutorial linked in my signature. If you can't see the signature, be...

    Oil contamination

Leakage from water jacket to engine oil, may or may not, affect cylinder compression. Inconclusive. If the oil looks like a milkshake, you have big problems.
