DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Bent Rim... Front Tire Blow Out... Crashed

Yes there is. Being in that situation, and listening to/watching dozens of bikes going past on a nice sunny day... :( We live on a 'bike' road, that's access to some of the more popular riding in the area.

Just think of the scars as an 'anti-theft' disguise. ;)

    Tapered Roller Bearings - Why?

No guarantees... But they should be OK. I found the manual I was referring to above - an old Clymer one - it just shows balls being used - but it only covers up to 1976. But back in those days, Yamaha was pretty good about 'standardising' as much as they could across model years - and across...

Bent Rim... Front Tire Blow Out... Crashed

You showed me yours... You showed me yours... Here's mine - my Ducati front, from back in '95. I was behind a car, in sheeting rain, LOTS of road spray - AND I was sitting back, because the intersection that I had already overshot was about 200 metres away (and destination another 5-6 kms...

You mean you've just been playing? :p Looks to me like you're moving just fine! ;):D

    Tapered Roller Bearings - Why?

Usually the swingarm gets things like 'needle roller' bearings... If the steering stem bearings are anything like some (most) of the ones I've seen - esp. from similar vintage bikes - you'll need new ones - not just clean the old... Somewhere I've got a manual (well - had - but I'm sure it's...

    Ducati Cucciolo

Pete - a handy site to check is www.ducati.ms - they have a Vintage section - and there's a bunch of pretty clued up guys on the site, who are generally very willing to help out - either with info and/or parts. I know they'd appreciate your rebuild tale and pictures too!

    Ducati Cucciolo

Aerosol 'gasket stripper' (I used CRC - available in NZ - don't know about the rest of the world...) works wonders on carboned up pistons too! Used it to clean the pistons on my V6 3.5 Mitsi Montero at Christmas when I had to do the head gaskets. They cleaned up a treat!

    I crashed last night

That's tough dude! At least you managed to walk (OK - not very far - but it WAS a walk) away from it. The good thing is that you'll start to heal soon, and each day you'll feel better. Some days a little, and some days a lot! DAMHIK! Hang in there, and start moving around as much as you can -...

    Master link clip on?

I've only had this problem with the large 630 pitch chains on the GS(X)... My fix was to clean the joining link and clip, then put a blob of silicon rubber on the top. Leave it overnight to set, and all is good. Never liked the idea of an extra bit of wire on my chain. And YES - I did check the...

    Isle of Man TT?

My wife and I were there in '96 for practice week and race week - pitcrew for a mate who was racing a 600. Partied up with a bunch of Kiwis who I knew (and were racing). Did some laps on my Ducati, and even took the wife around for a fast lap on the back of HER RF900.... Even got air over the...

    Can I run a 150 tire on a 3.5 rim?

If you've got a wider swingarm and side clearances aren't a problem, then a 150 on a 3.5" is fine. I ran one for years on my spoked 18" rims on my old GSX. Pirelli Phantoms at first, then Michelin A/M59x's (radials). With tubes. No probs. I found Michelin were slightly narrower than other brands...

    Rear shocks

MMmmmm Ohlins! :D I've just forked out $4000 (NZ - about $3K US) on Ohlins shocks and springs for both my Ducati and my wifes 1200 Bandit. Also picked up some second hand ones for the GSX (for when I start working on it again...). WHAT a difference! The Bandit in particular - now it handles more...

It was just a little wipe out

I can relate to the ski helmet thing. Bought my first one this season just gone ('09) as I've previously clocked myself at 100+ kmph (60-70 mph) via gps - I'm a bit of a 'bomber'... :D (why zig-zag when straight is so much faster?:p), and I also had both my lads out on skis this year (the...

    GS1100 carnage

If you don't want to fix it up, and decide to strip it for parts instead - I'm after a set of bare cases! I've got all the other bits I need, but my original cases were stolen  some time back... And I can probably afford the freight on bare cases...

    Second Shakedown ride 81GS1100E

Good work so far! Handy hint #1: If you're gonna replace your chain, replace both the sprockets as well - otherwise, you're likely to be replacing the chain again well before you would normally expect to... And you remove one more possible 'point of failure' in your drivetrain. Broken chains...

Ah well - maybe we'll meet up sometime, and figure it out... Ever been caving? Or racing (M/C's)? Or worked for Northrop Instruments/Datamatic? Kiwi Biker is a great group, but the mods are a bit of a law unto their own making... I go on and have a browse/read now and then, but just don't have...

Oil consumption. How much is too much?

    - skloF Folks - you've gotta remember - Simon's an Aussie! When he talks about hot - he's referring to 'Death Valley' type hot! 35-40C (95-105F) hot.... The Aussies get those temps even down south in Melbourne and Adelaide - and Simon's from the North (Cairns), which is tropical, so...

I haven't posted on kiwi Biker for years... I got infracted for what I thought was an unjustified reason, and rather than bother arguing with the mods, I just stopped. Oddly enough - I found I had a LOT more time to do stuff!! lol GSR keeps me busy enough... I DO get out on the Northland TNR...
