DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    1980 gs550e pod filters

FWIW, I'm running UNIs on my 550 (PK-82 is the model number, I think), and it wasn't a huge pain to tune for. It needed rejetting for sure. I re-re-jetted relatively recently after putting a 650 top end on it, but I can dig around and find the jets I pulled out if you want to know what size they...

    Good to know. Thank you.

'80 GS550E. Thanks folks, this forum is superb!

Thanks. My biggest worry right now is base gasket thickness. Did you make one, or just use one from a kit?

    650 piston rings

outside silver color is install to top slot and black is install to second slot.and make on topI'm working in a borrowed space so I won't be able to get in there and measure for probably a week or so. I did hone and measure my cylinders and they're hardly worn at all, so I probably could have...

'80 GS550E. Thanks folks, this forum is superb!

Congratulations on finishing your swap! I'm just starting the same process and it seems like most of the folks who've done it aren't active users here anymore. Do you mind if I hit you up when I inevitably start running into weirdnesses?

    650 piston rings

These are the ones that came off the piston. I'm holding them slightly off from one another so you can compare them, but their ID and OD are the same.

    650 piston rings

Since I already have my 550 engine out of the bike and torn down to swap out elements of my transmission, I am of course attempting to also drop on a 650 top end. Why just fix something when you have the opportunity to cause new problems as well! I've read all the threads (or at least a dozen)...

    splitting my 550 case

A little blast of MAP gas and a 6mm bolt/nut, and the thing popped right off. Thank you for your wisdom. https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ew1NrbW4p6UhUrRh8 I tried to include a photo of it cracked, but somehow between my original posting and now google has made it so I can't seem to link an image so...

    splitting my 550 case

I also suspect I have them all, but I'll give all the spaces a once-over. I have high hopes for using a bolt with that pry point. And more heat. It would not be surprising if the dowel is corroded. I doubt the case has ever been split. This bike didn't have particularly loving owners before me.

    splitting my 550 case

I tried getting a bar in that pry point, but I have the engine in a stand and it's hard to get a good angle. I love the idea of cranking up with a bolt/nut or tap. It's the same idea as my air wedges but smarter. I appreciate smart things. And yes - I pulled the clutch hub and everything I...

    splitting my 550 case

Thank you. I did try blasting it with a torch, but only really on the top (actually bottom) part. And then I put my torch down and tried to whack on it. Maybe I need a second pair of hands to jam a pry bar into that one notch while I blast some fire at the lump. I'll try that and then I'll try...

    splitting my 550 case

I have a GS550t that's had a rough life. Second gear has been slipping for a while (I just go straight from first to third), and I'm finally trying to deal with it. I've been following the teardown in the Service Manual off BikeCliff's site, and I've made it as far as "separate the lower...

    Super Low MPG

I apologize if it feels like I've been disrespectful to y'all. It feels to me like I got a bunch of good suggestions and then several posts chastising me for not doing maintenance that was already performed by a professional, but I understand now that you all would feel better if I did it...

    Super Low MPG

I've read the newbie mistakes. I've been reading the forum pretty actively for a couple of years. And I totally understand the fundamental aspects of your advice, we just have different operating understandings of this: y'all have no reason to have any faith in me, my mechanic, or the PO's...

    Super Low MPG

I don't feel disrespected. I'm trying the possible ideas for the root cause that the brethren suggested, and once I see how that pans out I'll dive into the routine maintenance. Didn't mean to be shooting anything down, I'm just still working on the suggestions from posts five pages ago, so the...

    Super Low MPG

FYI I'm at a half turn on my fuel screws right now and it's still driving the same, although it's idling slightly lower.

Yeah. Is there another way to know?

    Super Low MPG

Steve - The valves aren't due for an adjustment for another thousand miles (per the service manual and records). I'll get in there when it's time, and maybe before if I have the free time, but right now up-time is more crucial than cleaning up my MPG. And the 550 has seen some things - it's been...

    Super Low MPG

Because it's the easiest thing to get at and test I'm doing my fuel screws this afternoon. We'll see how that changes things. Nessism - I haven't gone into the valves. I've always doing oil and basic maintenance but I'm still pretty new at really pulling things open, and like I (think) I said...
