A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Lithium Ion batteries combusting?

A guy on KZ Rider burned down his workshop, when a LI-ion power tool battery caught fire. Rob S is our resident expert on such fires in NYC.

    GS850L Makeover

The cover over the top of the fuel sending unit is a back-up, redundant, catch can funnel, with a nipple on the bottom for a hose. If the main fuel sending unit seal fails, the catch can will keep fuel from dripping down on top of your hot engine. Run the rubber hose down to the ground...

    Manual Petcock for a 1978 GS550?

Other than some members here using Pringel, mostly high performance applications, my memory doesn't recall very many people searching out non-vacuum options. The standard Suzuki vacuum petcocks are largely without fault, other than wearing out over the years. No doubt, you can find a manual...

    Looking good! New GSX 8tt

No doubt, some truth here! That said, I absolutely hate the hacked off fender look that is so common these days. "Tidy Tail" = hack job, in many cases (my opinion)

    Looking good! New GSX 8tt

Repeating myself, but the new bikes, while looking better, are in no way worth the extra cost. The technology being added is close to zero, it's just different styling. Mind you, I'm no fan of the 8S styling, but the new retro models don't look super-duper either, so why bother? To me, the...

Is there such a thing as a cheap Beemer?

Apparently, BMW motorcycles are similar to their cars, in that they have good vehicle dynamics, and power, but crap reliability. Airheads excluded, maybe, but since that point, they are NOT the reliable vehicles that their reputation suggests.

    GS550 BS32 carburetor vent lines

The vent hoses route up and back, to some secure place above the airbox. Keep the hoses open, so the carbs can "vent".

Bring in National Guard! Bring in the marines! Americans are under attack (H)

And speaking of squirrel's...they cause a fair number of vehicle accidents. People freak out when one runs out into the road, then they crash their car or motorcycle trying to avoid it. It happened to a brother of a friend. Another time, riding my bike in the mountains, where the road was...

I love those bikes! Obviously! I own one! Not a GPz, but a KZ. One of the best UJM's ever, in my opinion.

Bring in National Guard! Bring in the marines! Americans are under attack (H)

My walking route includes a loop through the local park, where there are lots of squirrel's. I carry a bag of almonds, and toss one to each critter that comes up to me. Squirrel's have a pretty bad attention span. To make sure they find the almond tossed their way, I hold it out, and wait...

Replacing the starter clutch is more work on that bike, but you can do it with the engine in place. Tons of threads on this at KZ Rider. Buy a new starter clutch gear, rollers, springs. And NO bic pen springs, thank you.

Could your carbs have a Dynojet kit installed? I say that because Dynojet has a different numbering scheme than Mikuni, and the numbers are higher. If those are 185 Mikuni mains, I'm surprised the bike would even run. At KZ Rider, your first post must be an introduction, or the mods get mad...

    First road bike - 1982 GS550L

Replace those tires. They are too old. There is a member here with something like 125k miles on an original GS550. GS bikes are tough. Biggest impediment to high mileage are people that don't do maintenance. Valve adjustment in particular.

On KZ Rider, you can download the factory service manual. Like Suzuki, Kawasaki published a full first year manual, then a supplement for each year after, showing changes. You may need to join the site in order to download. It's a nice site. Huge knowledge on the early big KZ's there. Less...
