A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. HJC Sy-Max

I have been riding with the CL Max for two years now. Went with it due to the price, since it was either buy the less expensive model or not ride. My dad has had the Sy Max, and I think it is a better helmet. After using the helmet for a couple of months, the latch doesn't work quite as...

    Pulling cylinders

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping the solution was something simple like that. Looks like a trip to Harbor Freight is coming up.

    Pulling cylinders

I had a pint can of solvent on the bench and when I moved the engine the fin came down on the edge of the can instead of next to it. I know that you have to be careful not to break the fins when pulling the cylinders, I just don't know how to accomplish the job without screwing up. This will be...

    Pulling cylinders

I have to tear down three engines over the next year to replace gaskets and do some repairs. While I was moving the 1100 engine on my bench I managed to bust off a chunk of fin when I hit something. My question is this; how do you get the cylinder block off without breaking any more fins? Do I...

    Cheap and Easy Plastic Repairs...

Hotcha Glue, from Vetter, is simply an automotive grade epoxy, actually manufactured by Lord Corporation. Any good quality epoxy will be indistinguishable in this type of application. As for paintability, epoxies can be painted over; it may require a primer to privent the repaired area from...

GR 650 Tempter Motor In A GS 400???

Would it be possible to put the head from a 400, 425, or 450 on the 500 engine. They are basically the same, and I can't see them changing the bolt pattern for the heads. Just a thought.

    Muriatic acid?

Sulfuric and nitric acids are two of the three components needed to make nitroglycerine or TNT. The best way to remove rust from a tank or any surface is to buy something formulated to do the job. Otherwise you risk serious injury if you screw up, or get stuck with hazardous chemicals left...

    flexible glue or solvent??

New ones would be the best, but if you want to try a repair, use silicone sealant.

Heated Vest - Very Low Cost

The heat packs that work when exposed to air can be put in a ziploc bag after the ride and reused, up to a point. If you have an hour ride and use the packs with a 4 hour life, you can get three trips out of them, and part of a fourth, that way. I keep a pack of the toe warmers in my tank bag...

    Poll: Oil brands/types

I use Mobil Delvac 1300 diesel oil, about $7 a gallon at Walmart. While synthetics and motorcycle specific oils are better performing, I don't think there is any practical difference between them and what I use, considering the type of riding I do, and the oil change intervals I use.

    What are these plugs for?

They are for vibration dampening. I picked up an added sound on my 82 when they finally fell out. Not a lot of noise, but after 15 years I noticed the change in sound immediately.

Can fuel petcock diaphragm be repaired?

Try here for a diaphragm. http://www.sudco.com/k&lfuelsuz.html A lot of local shops won't bother trying to find parts for older bikes. If the manufacturer doesn't carry it, it doesn't exist, as far as they're concerned. Becoming proficient with internet search engines is becoming a must if you...

    81 vs. 82 GS1100E Engine Diff's

The choke setup is different between the 81 and 82 models. The 81 is a knob in the steering head, and the 82 has a lever on the handlebar. You'd need to swap the choke linkage on the carbs. The airboxes are a little different, and the main jet is different between the 81 & 82's.

    Hard trunk for a GS450L?

If you have a luggage rack, you can get a Givi trunk. I bought one through Arizona Motorsports. They make several different sizes from 30 liter to 45 liter.

    82 1100E handlebars

Michael, those aren't the stock bars on your bike. They look like superbike bars, a little narrower, lower, and less of a bend than stock.

    Safe degreaser??

For cleaning my rear wheel, I use Simple Green. I bought a small scrubbrush at Lowes that holds about 4 oz. of liquid soap. Squeeze the back to apply some soap, and scrub away. It makes the job go fairly quick. Even concentrated, Simple Green isn't too aggressive to use on aluminum, just don't...

    More bottom end

How long have you had this bike? I know the 1100's really start to pull at 6 grand, but they're still strong from 2500 on up. It almost sounds to me like you have partially blocked carb passages. I'd be tempted to run a couple of tanks through with a heavy dose of Sea Foam in the gas, just to...

    EBay Registration

I have a credit card that I use for online purchases. I use it based on the company policy of zero charge to me in case of online fraud. It's getting more and more difficult to avoid putting some type of info out there on the net. All you can do is make your best effort to keep your butt...

Cracked plastic. Best way to repair?

For repairs, the best you're going to do is the plastic weld mentioned above, along with the drilling of small holes at the ends of the cracks. The only thing I would add would be a piece of cloth to cover the repair area. Fiberglass cloth would be the best, but some ripstop nylon would work...

Can only use half the tank?

Try putting the petcock on prime. If it runs ok then, the screen on the filter in the tank is probably clogged up.
