A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Honda guy with a Suzuki: GS550 project

I've had 5 550's over the years. I have three restored in my garage and a GS650G 82 on the go (two actually). The goo in the photo is pretty typical of what I've seen when I peel back the layers to clean. Likely oil/lube from the chain and possibly grease from the worm gear? From scanning...

    Snapped Shock Mount

Stipping down a 1982 GS650G in order to have the frame sand blasted and powder coated. The previous owner had extension bolts on the one top shock mounting bolt/thread which snapped off when I was taking it off. There is a wee bit of the thread left, likely enough to get a chrome nut on it...

New member from northern lower Michigan

I took an 82 GS550L beater non-runner that I picked up cheap $300 last winter for a project and turned into a GS550T by swiching the seat, bars, side covers, rear grab rail and it is a much nicer looking ride. New seat cover from Pit Replicas on eBay. Have fun with the GS550 project!

1982 GS650G Need Photos of Electrical and Air Box

I have started a winter project of restoring a 82 GS650G. Bought the bike a few weeks ago for $300 Canadian dollars and will be stripping it down to the frame, sand blasting and powder coating it all back to life. Found a brand new tank, side covers and tail piece and will have a new seat...

Kiwi Canuck tries his Luck with a Six Fiddy

Thanks, that was me who asked. I found this too shortly after we exchanged pm's. I have recently picked up a rough old 82 GS650G that I will be restoring frame up for my winter project. I will soon start a thread on it for all to see. Figure it is my turn to share the experience as I have...

    Broken Header Bolt

Had the same problem, same bike (1982) last month only I broke two of them. I took a dremel, finished off the end real flat and clean, tapped the center of the stud with a regular punch to mark the center and drilled it out with an electric hand drill using a small, then medium and then near...

    Broken Exhaust Bolt Removal Help!

Had the same problem and I sat and stared at it for about two months and finally got the nerve up to drill them out. I too broke of the easy out on one bolt but manage to get it out with a drill bit. I drilled out the bolts to near to the threads in the head and then proceeded to tap a new...

Might have found another gs project

If you do not like the L configuration, getaseat for an 81 GS550T, it is flat and fits with a few modifications to the locking system. Looks and rides better. I did it this summer to an 82 GS550L. There is a replacement seat cover available on ebay for the T if you do this and can not find a...

Anyone out there in GS land know whether these two years have interchangeable exhaust systems for the G and or L?

Looks like my riding days are done.

Good on you for knowing when to call it a day. Maybe you'll rekindle the want somewhere down the road to ride again, maybe not. Sounds like you got a lot of good times from the rides and the friends you met here. It also sounds like you have another passion in the car you're working on. I...

Clutch cable sticky and makes noise

I have a few 550's and found the same thing. Solved it when I removed the clutch cover, which is simple enough, and loaded the nylon worm gear with some lithium grease. For me that fixed the jerky response I was getting when I released the clutch. Also a new cable will never hurt if the one...

    Hard to Start GS550T

All hoses are in place and are tight. I am thinking it is the float levels. As I mentioned I bought the carbs on eBay from someone who had apparently rebuilt them. I have a ride with my friend who is flying in from eastern Canada in June so I think I will leave it as is for now (cuz they...

    Hard to Start GS550T

Thanks for the reply. I am assuming that the bowls are draining, I will check next time by loosening the bowl drain screw on the carbs to see if this is the case and be sure to put a rag down to catch any of the flow that comes out. I do not get the sense that they are draining into the...

    Hard to Start GS550T

I have two GS550T's .... why? It's along story. The black one I resorted from the frame up, powder coat, engine overhaul... including the carbs which I did myself. I have done ten sets or better and I am pretty familiar with how clean them and how they go together. It starts within a nono...

    New Member, Carb removal Gs550e

I would suggest you give my method a try ... I have 3 550's and have R&R the carbs a dozen times. They come off and go back on just as I have described. To reinstall a little WD40 on the carbs and rubber helps a lot. If my method works for you, you have made life just a little simplier for...

    New Member, Carb removal Gs550e

First step is to ensure you have loosened the rubber manifold clamps fully. Next remove the screws in the front top of the air filter box where you foam air filter is kept. The last bolt to remove is the one on the side of the air filter box where all the electrical stuff is hooked to. There...

GS450T Seat Size ... Need a Measurement Please

In early Jan I received the new reproduction seat cover for my 1981 GS550T from Pit Upholstry. It is perfect. Probably better than a new one from 35 years ago. I can not recommend this company enough! http://www.bikeupholstery.com they do not have the seat listed on the website at the time...

So In late Nov I sent him the old seat cover (original off my project bike that was torn and cut) and they have recently replicated it and a new one is in the mail to me now and the only cost to me was the that of the cost of shipping the original to them! I am very much looking forward to...
