A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    clutch grabbing and shaky riding

I changed clutch plates on my second 1000G by laying on its side on rolls of old carpet. Didn't have to change the oil. I would also look hard at the clutch cable. There are some poor quality ones out there that aren't really up to it. Sheaths that compress, stretchy cable.

    Shim kits for valves?

I bought one of these kits some decades ago. It seems like as it is used the old shims I put ack into the box tend to be very similar in thickness.

    Is it worth it?

There is a reason that there are a lot of survivors. A GS850 can take massive abuse

    New to the GS engine!

The E model does not have a plane bearing bottom end I don't believe. The G model (shaft drive) does. I think the ball bearing bottom end provides additional tolerance of neglect and abuse. At least all the 850s and 1000s I've had seemed pretty impervious to abuse. As to getting it running...

The Yugo???? Dude only repairs Yugos

Fiat 128 could be a really fun car. A Yugo should have been as well. Poorly made copy using inferior material. Even Fiats and BMWs of a certain age used quick rusting inferior Solviet Union steel. Had a girlfriend with a tricked out X-19 and a buddy had a hot rodded Fiat 128. I helped my...

Help! Your Bike Won't Run Well

I ran into a problem with a 1000G where the vent off the top of the head into the airbox didn't work. The thin slots in the top of the box had clogged with rust. The crank case pressurized. It took me a while to figure out what was wrong. More than once I have synched the carbs by completing...

When do you expect ev bikes to become practical road bikes.

On a tour 11 years ago, we din a 600 mile day first day then 2 more later after a broken front wheel caused a 2 1/2 day delay we did 2 back to back 600 mile days. 3 of the bikes, a 1983 GS1100G and two GS850Gs, easily handled the 600 mile days. Those were Unfaired bikes and we avoided...

Attrition in available tires for 1000G What is recommeded now?

I was thinking about new tires for the 1000G The Avons were getting a bit past their best, then I apparently ran over a machine screw. No Avons any more. I prefer the original size, 120-90-17 rear and 100-90-19 front. What is out there that you like? I can live with a 130 rear and a 90/90...

    My new 1982 GS1100G

The stock tire translates to a 100-90-19 and 120-90-17 rear. Most people use an easier 130.on the rear. I happen to prefer the stock sizes. For me the steeringfeels more neutral. Nice bike. I had one like it but gave it to my brother.

I would appreciate input on LED head lights lights and accessory lights

Thanks. The plugs on the R/R are the ones I was referring to. Does the 775 have a voltage sensing input? I've only seen a few GS that didn't show some overheating damage on the stator wires at the connectors. My GS do not have any connectors on the R/R, the come out of the box. The 775 has...

I would appreciate input on LED head lights lights and accessory lights

I ran an 80-100 OSRAM halogen in my Commando for years without melting anything, or running out of electricity. Fotr my, what I don't like about the replacement of the R/R is that it uses plugs. I have a strong preference for soldered connections.

I would appreciate input on LED head lights lights and accessory lights

I appreciate it, Gorminder. The Truck Light just isn't going to happen unless they make it look much more like a standard tail light. It looks like a Halloween mask to me. The '81 already came with dual filament turn signal/ running lights in front. I could make that happen in the rear turn...

I would appreciate input on LED head lights lights and accessory lights

I don't have a shortage of electricity. If I ever needed a new R/R I would consider a newer type, as I think they are easier on the stator and may lower oil temperatures. That said, I don't need one right now, all my GS have the Gold Wing type, and frankly, I've had a lot of trouble over the...

I would appreciate input on LED head lights lights and accessory lights

I've been searching LED threads. Most are quite old, so I was hoping to get some information from those with a little long term experience. I would like to have brighter lights all around. Running lights (currently in front only), turn signals, tail lights, and brake light can all use an...

1979 gs850g suddenly sets out on cylinder 1 and 4

You should be able to switch which set of points/coil operates which two cylinders. I've done that to make sure it was the condenser, which it was. OEM points and condenser were high priced. Todd is correct about the spark though. A good condenser collects and grounds the wasted energy that is...
