I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Screws for the right hand handle switch

While repairing my starter button on my 1978 GS 1000 I lost the two phillips head screws that attach the unit to the handle bar, part # 5 in the photo. Would someone please tell me the size and thread pitch? Thank you!

    1978 GS 1000/G brake pads

Nessism, that's what I thought. My title states GS 1000/G. I assume it's a mistake and possibly supposed to be "C". It's chain drive, spoke wheels, and the side covers have only GS 1000. Thank you.

    1978 GS 1000/G brake pads

When looking for brake pads for my 1978 GS 1000/G I can't find this model. I find a C, EC, N, and EN. The part numbers for these models are the same. Would my GS1000/G be the same? Thanks!

what did you wrench on today??

My 1978 GS 1000 would only run on three cylinders. I replaced the spark plug caps, spark plugs, cleaned every wire connection (with a set of $60 diamond electrical cleaning tools), and ran another cable from the negative battery post to the frame (two grounding cables now). It has never ran...

    Airplane fuel

Thanks for your reply. Would 110 octane racing fuel be any different?

    Airplane fuel

A friend of mine has a 103 Harley dyna. I'm sure my 78 GS 1000 will smoke it. I thought a couple quarts of airplane fuel added in my fuel tank would give me a boost. Has anyone done this, and is there anyway it would hurt my bike?

    Pits in paint

The pits are to the bare metal. I did buy a Meguiar's polish that really helped the oxidation but the pits are to the metal.

    Pits in paint

I have a maroon 78 GS 1000 that has many small pits in the tank paint. Is there any way to disguise/cover up the flaws without repainting? Does anyone know the code for this maroon paint color? Thanks

    fuel tap issues

Not to argue but I just installed a petcock kit from 2 fast moto ($17) and it works perfect. The diaphragm I bought first didn't work because the o-ring shaft was too short and wouldn't seal unless I bent the disc that seats in the spacer.

what did you wrench on today??

I put a petcock kit from 2 fast moto in my 1978 GS 1000, it works perfect. I have a spare that I converted to non-vacuum but didn't like the looks of the shortened lever.

    Possible petcock fix?

I did have to cut a little off the lever to clear the tank. That made it a little harder to switch positions.

    Possible petcock fix?

The reason I did this is my 42 year old diaphragm was leaking fuel, getting sucked into the vacuum port on cylinder #3. I replaced the diaphragm and in the process lost the rubber gasket with the four holes (on the lever side of petcock). I replaced that four hole gasket with an old one from a...

    Possible petcock fix?

It works perfect!! By removing the little stop tab so the lever can be straight up I have OFF. By removing the diaphragm o-ring I have ON (without needing vacuum) and still have a functioning RESERVE when in the RESERVE position. PRIME is no longer needed since vacuum is not connected. The...

    Possible petcock fix?

The way I tried to explain you would have an Off and still have a reserve. The most important would be the OFF position.

    Possible petcock fix?

The petcock on my 1978 GS 1000 leaks fuel through the vacuum diaphragm. Fuel is sucked into the vacuum port on carb #3. I read somewhere that if the stop tab is removed so the petcock lever can be put pointing up it serves as an off. With the diaphragm o-ring removed fuel should flow as if...

    1978 GS 1000 airbox boots

My airbox boots don't seem to slide on the carbs all the way on my 1978 GS 1000. I found these on Ebay, they look like the right ones but the ad reads 77-79. I didn't think a GS 1000 was made in 77 so I question the seller. Any opinions? https://www.ebay.com/itm/163732970115.

what did you wrench on today??

Today I fixed my fuel gage, it would only go to 1/4 tank. After reading Mr. Jethro's "fuel gage send unit repair" it now reads accurate from full to empty (I did brake the little wire and re solder it). Thanks to all on this great site!

1978 GS 1000 motor to carb intake boots

Update, My 78 1000 runs great with zero air leaks. Once warmed up the idle stays at 1200 rpm all day. Thanks to all!!

what did you wrench on today??

Today I replaced the intake manifold O rings. With all that goes with it, I fixed the air leak. The intake boots were in good shape, so I felt good. Test ride was almost red line in the first 4, 110 mph when I hit 5th. It's good!
