    Dyna S timing cylinders 2-3 '80 GS1000G

Just swapped the Black and White wires from the Dyna S Ignition to check the 2-3 coil for static timing. Cylinders 1-4 have been static timed. 2-3 should be 180 degrees from that. After swapping the wires, I marked the advancer plate with a fine sharpie for the 2-3 coil off of the 1-4 pickup...

    Dyna S timing cylinders 2-3 '80 GS1000G

How do you static time adjust the pickup for the 2-3 cylinders? There's no marking for the 2-3 Advance or Fire on this model. Set 1-4 static timing with a test light super easy. When it comes to 2-3, Dyna has adjustable pickups to dial them in, but there is no reference marks aside from the TDC...

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

Problem solved!!!! It was the ignitor. I installed the dyna s ignition, removed the ignitor, dialed in the mixture screws, and put her through the ropes. Uphill, downhill, engine braking, high revving. Runs like a dream. Now to replace the clutch basket. Getting slippage when I shift up while...

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

I need to get better at answering in one reply. I'm keeping this bike stock everything, except for the electrical system. The PO melted the harness and other electrical extremities. New harness, coils, leads, R/R, and now...ignition

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

Did try swapping out the tank (with a petcock that has proven to work) but that didn't have any effect.

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

Just installed a dyna s ignition. Was thinking about the ignitor as the problem, and figured I might as well get rid of it. And I've already installed dyna coils and leads, and a new R/R. Static timed 1-4, but there's no marks for timing on the 2-3 side. Any tips for dialing that in?

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

Picked up a compression gauge, and rechecked. The other numbers were from my donor bike, and I spaced out in my note taking. All cylinders are at 140 after warming it up. Put some Marvel's in the cylinders, and got 160-160-145-145. Dialed in the carbs, again... just to make sure that isn't the...

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

Crap. Those compression numbers might not be accurate. I was at my buddy's shop, and we checked compression on a few bikes. I'm gonna check it again, and log the numbers. I do know that all four cylinders were within 5 psi, and that was a dry test. If they were 90-95 dry testing, though, would...

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

Did a compression test. Cyl's 1-3 were at 96. Cyl 4 at 92. Went WOT uphill after the backfire/die/wait/restart. It was totally bogging down, so I'm thinking it's fuel restriction. Again, the engine runs terrific on the center stand, all way up to WOT. If it was timing, it would be pretty...

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

The PO's petcock is new generic aftermarket. If it was made for a smaller bike, but fit the gs1000g, could there be a flow issue? As in, the amount of fuel being restricted when running, not keeping up, and draining the float bowls.?

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

-Runs great up to WOT on the stand. Feels good riding until decelerating. First time was after 3-4 miles on the first ride after test rides during the restoration. Now it’s within 1 mile, after warm up. -Complete carb clean rebuild. Measured the floats. Tapped the float bowls after it’s died...

GS1000G Backfires and dies when decelerating.

‘80 GS1000G Dies after backfire when decelerating. Engine runs great when on the center stand. Dies when riding after I decelerate (engine brake) and it pops a couple backfires. After a minute or two, will start up and run enough to hobble home. Stock everything except for the coils. New Dyna...

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Drats! Thanks for the reply. I have a set of stock 4-2's from a free parts bike, but they have the crappy "header" spray paint flaking off of the chrome. Gonna try to get them back to chrome. I did try the ColorTune. It actually worked as claimed! I'm not sure what setup was used with...

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

These aren't them, but they're the same type. The megaphones with the exposed baffle. Not the fully enclosed pipes. They have screws/rivets keeping the end plate in. So they are removable. I just need to find something to fit back in there

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Running pretty good now! No more white wispy smoke. I live in Seattle, so there's plenty of steep hills to put load on the engine. May have been buildup in the cylinders, or stuck rings, or the carb dip residue I didn't get blown out. Finally had some decent weather to get to open her up WOT...

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Good call. If there?s still gunk at the bottom of the threads, that could give a false seating for the mixture screws. Still waiting for the ColorTune to come in, and looking forward to try it out. Plugs look decent now, maybe a little lean, though. Unfortunately, it looks like I have a blown...

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

I?ve set the fuel mixture screws at 2 turns out. That?s just for preliminary work for getting the carbs adjusted. I have a CarbTune Pro, and set the #2 & #3 butterfly?s at 5 cmHg marks below the outer cylinders. I haven?t tuned carbs on a bike with a stock airbox setup before, but the shop guide...

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Thanks, all, for the replies and support. Working out problems on bikes is half of the fun for me (the other half is riding them, of course). Keep it shiny side up, y'all!

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Good to know. I extracted the plugs and removed the fuel mixture screws from a crusty old parts bike (same year/model) and they came out lickety split! No red anti-tamper or Loctite. I think this was just a parting gift from the PO.
