If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Fortnine review of GS 850

I've heard 20% losses for a shafty overall from multiple sources, so I could be convinced. This video's claim - that each gear in the shaft driveline causes a 15-20% loss in and of itself - is less believable.

The Great & Terrible Ask "which exhaust headers not made for the 650G fit the 650G"

The Great & Terrible Ask "which exhaust headers not made for the 650G fit the 650G" My bike [1981 650G] is loud. Extremely loud. My friend tells me that when I meet her at the archery range, she can hear me coming two full minutes before I show up. In the middle of the woods. I short-shift into...

    81 GS1100E brake hoses.

Heads up, I've ordered two things from Patriot Racing in the last year or so (a valve cover gasket and a set of brakelines for my 650G). For whatever reason, despite being listed as in stock, and despite me knowing my card is functional, both orders were cancelled and refunded within a day of me...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

If I'm imagining what "on the motor behind the head" means right, I think you're likely experiencing an issue with the valve cover gasket (or possibly the valve cover itself, but probably the gasket). There's a series of drain passages built into the valve cover and the head that make it very...

    Wheel Runout

That sounds like a wheel bearing issue - I think that's the only place in the manual where runout readings are mentioned in relation to the front wheel. Those should be replaceable.

    Plastic floats?

When I had a 450 (brass floats) I mistakenly ordered some of the plastic floats from a four (can't quite remember which one - I think they're broadly similar if not identical across models) for a replacement. I can confirm they look like they fit, that they fit into the pin, that they'll...

81 GS650G - what were these bolt holes on the frame used for?

Without getting too much in the weeds (I'll probably make a dedicated thread when progress begins again)... what I think you're describing is how the fairing stay (and fairing and headlight) I liberated from ebay for a song is supposed to attach to its bike of origin - a rectangular lug on the...

81 GS650G - what were these bolt holes on the frame used for?

Thanks for the info. That gives me pause on using these for a fairing mount. An oil cooler probably only weighed about two or three pounds wet, so I'd be gambling a little on how many times the margin of safety Mr. Suzuki put into these threads was...

81 GS650G - what were these bolt holes on the frame used for?

That was a thought I had too. However, my bike has the horn mounted up above that on a separate bracket, and from what I can tell from images of other people's bikes, that seems standard. EDIT: I guess it's possible they were intended for aftermarket extra-loud extra-heavy horns, or dual horns...

81 GS650G - what were these bolt holes on the frame used for?

I have started moving again on a long-stalled project involving a frame mounted fairing on my bike. I've been hemming and hawing and drafting various weird bent-metal mounting solutions for quite a while, somehow without realizing there are two threaded bolt holes (seem to be about M10 or M12)...

HELP! Spacing issues - swap GS650 forks to 77 GS750, speedo drive width???

Megabump over a decade later - but I see you mention installing a Tarozzi fork brace on a pair of 1981? GS650G forks. Which brace did you use for this? The one listed on Fast from the Past is for the '83 Kat 650. It seems like their GT550 brace would interchange - is that what it was? EDIT...

Psyching myself up for the top end - any veteran eyes up to read borescope pictures?

It actually runs fine and has given me about 4,200 miles of service in the last year - it just leaks. A little bit after my last post, I did conclusively figure out that the oil I was seeing was from some sneaky valve cover leaks, not bad gaskets. Not that that means the gaskets are good to...

Psyching myself up for the top end - any veteran eyes up to read borescope pictures?

I'm now realizing one of my edits ate an important part of my original post. Yes, I saw some evidence of detonation (I assume you're talking about cylinder 1?) - there's one or two small circular divots (seems to mostly be in the carbon layer?) that absolutely refused to show up on camera.

Psyching myself up for the top end - any veteran eyes up to read borescope pictures?

Thanks, but this isn't really my entry into the club - no beginner's luck for me. This is my third bike, second GS, and third or fourth (or fifth?) major repair project. I can certainly show you where I saw oil on the engine during and after my diagnostic rides.... (these aren't up to date...

Psyching myself up for the top end - any veteran eyes up to read borescope pictures?

Yeah, I didn't go into detail, but I had a "oh no the cylinder gaskets are leaking!" scare the previous (first) time I adjusted the valves and replaced the cover gasket. That was my first introduction to the labyrinthine design of the valve cover and cylinder head air and drain paths - which I...

Psyching myself up for the top end - any veteran eyes up to read borescope pictures?

Cylinder 1 - the major suspect. I see a lot of burnt oil (the shiny stuff on the bottom lip and piston head, right?) a LOT of burnt oil - but it seems there's a little bit on the piston head (from the rings) and a lot under the intake valve (bottom of these sets of image) - or is it the other...

Psyching myself up for the top end - any veteran eyes up to read borescope pictures?

1981 Suzuki GS 650 G, just under 30,000 miles (see signature). Long story short, I'm pretty sure I'm leaking quite a bit of oil out of the base and head gasket after my last valve adjustment. Note that I'm pretty sure - I've been fooled by sneaky cover leaks before, so I've tried to make very...

What you need to remove to get to the starter motor - 1981 GS650G

Sorry, I already swapped the starter successfully; I was just reporting back for future seekers of knowledge.

What you need to remove to get to the starter motor - 1981 GS650G

My starter went bad, and when preparing to replace it I saw conflicting information on whether or not you needed to remove the CCT and carbs to get to the motor. I'm reporting back to say definitively: 1) You *do* need to remove the CCT. Or, at the absolute very least, it was already so...

    Steering stem removal and replacement

I think the 81 came stock with tapered rollers, but in any case, the replacements I got are tapered.
