A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    ‘83 gs550L pipe replacements

I do have a dedicated thread for my idling issue, but even starting the bike is slightly easier ever since I put that clamp on. The revs are much more stable and I don’t have to play with the choke NEARLY as much. At stops, I can slow down the engine in the friction zone and it won’t immediately...

    ‘83 gs550L pipe replacements

Other than direct replacements, are there any pipes that should fit? I finally put a proper clamp between the header and muffler and that seemed to help a lot of my idling issues, so other than a rejet, I’m thinking the next best would be to put the (close to) original 4-2 exhaust setup back on it.

    ‘83 gs550L pipe replacements

Wondering if anyone has a list of bikes that I could rip the exhaust off of to replace the 4-1 pipe that the PO of my bike installed. Picture included. Heading out to a salvage yard this weekend. I know they have a bunch of Yamaha 4-2 pipes there. As long as all the bolts line up and they extend...

    83 GS550L rejet

I never thought to check the choke plungers actually. I turn the petcock to prime because it feels as though I’m not getting enough fuel in the cylinder to start, esp cold, and that is simpler in a pinch to taking the seat off and holding my hand over the intake. I’m assuming loosening the...

    83 GS550L rejet

Hoping to get some suggestions/information on jetting my ‘83 GS550L. Have ruled out air leaks on engine side of carbs and tightened all spark plugs/exhaust bolts. Even installed a brand new exhaust clamp to rule out a pesky leak between the header and exhaust joint. And when I pulled my carbs...

Carb OEM specs as per factory manuals

    LOTS of pages here so I don’t know if it’s been posted before (did a few searches so I’m fairly confident it hasn’t lol). GS 550 L 1983 Mikuni BSW30SS Model Carb (2 separate carbs, twin bore) bore size 30mm (1.2in) id no 43510 idle r/min 1100 +/- 100r/min fuel level 6.5mm +/- 0.5 (0.26 +/-...

    Intake boots

So I pulled the bike out for the first ride of the season, and promptly flooded cylinders 1 and 2 lol. I took the carbs off over the winter and they are as clean as clean can get so clogged jets are not the issue at all. I replaced all the plugs too, because I got too excited and snapped one...

    Intake boots

Turns out I was too optimistic this afternoon haha. Took it out for a short run and it was still shooting up to 3000. Though now that I know the rubbers still have some life in them I am turning my eyes toward the carbs. I made an attempt to take the boots off after work and the starter plungers...

    Intake boots

Hate to leave anyone hanging on this, but I found a temporary solution! I was going to push the carbs back just enough to take the intakes off to soak them, when I noticed they were still supple and the carbs slid out very easy. Taking a can of silicone protectant (has chemicals known to...

    Intake boots

If I’m chasing air leaks, am I mainly looking on the intake or engine side of the carbs? I just had a thought that the intake will only intake soo much, but the engine side and the intake manifold boots are where extra air would come from. Am I thinking about this too much or am I on to...

Good thing the seat is soo darn easy to get off!

    Intake boots

That’s reassuring haha. Honestly one of the things I love about old bikes is how they have characters like this. Needs just as much go-juice as I do in the morning haha

    Intake boots

Debating on if I should start a new thread for this, but I thought it would be appropriate here, since I am suspect that the intake boot might be part of my issue. But my bike just does not want to idle, especially in the mornings when it’s a little colder. on first start, I always have the...

    Intake boots

Photo is the condition of the boots as they are currently, couldn’t squeeze my phone under it. They are both the same. Was wondering if I could cheat the system by putting a thin layer of high-temp calliper grease esp at the carburetor joins?

    Intake boots

Suzukian those are exactly the ones! Also did a search for possibly restoring the rubbers since I wasn’t having any luck. Found an awesome video about restoring old rubber parts using wintergreen oil as a few have suggested!

    Intake boots

Thanks for the links and help everyone! This is for the engine side of the carbs. This fall I plan on doing a full carb clean and dressing the boots on both sides but just want to build a catalogue in case I need everything haha.

    Intake boots

Looking for ANYWHERE I might find intake boots for 1983 550L. The bsw30ss carbs seem to be fairly unique and as such I can’t seem to find anything like OEM boots anywhere. I have an air leak somewhere and I’m thinking the 40 year old intakes are a good place to start looking. Thanks for any help...

Just started reading your “top mistakes” thread! Gold mine there haha

    83 550L spark plugs

Almost feel like I should recommend this for a sticky haha. Fake plugs/parts are a bane on restoration and maintenance on our ol’ steeds.
