A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

Thanks Grimly, I looked at ither images of vm34s and noticed they are nearly closed just like you said. Next time i get a chance to fiddle with it ill see how I can adjust the cable. Thanks for the heads up.

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

I figured now is good time to update you guys the bike while I let my heart rate come down. My suspicion of air/fuel not making it to combution was correct. I took the pod filters off both carbs and shot a spray of starting fluid into each through the venturi. Hit the start button and it fired...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

"1-4 on the left and 2-3 on the right. From the coils, outer plug wires go to 1 and 3 and inner plug wires go to 2 and 4." Yep, that's what I said, was just being more descriptive of where all 4 plug wires were going. I figured that was important info for the firing order of pistons? maybe not...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

Plugs are bone dry after cranking several times. Bowls do have fuel. Didn't have time to get into how much. It's likely the same fuel that was vacuumed in the day I installed the carbs which was 3-4 weeks ago. When I get back to it I will drain the bowls, remove the air filters, do a visual...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

New ignition is installed, I have strong spark on all 4 so I can check that off. Still will not turn over. Now I can look into the fuel/carb situation. Getting closer. Just really wish I had more time to work on it! These are all firsts for me so I am ridiculously slow I mentioned before the...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

Installing the dynatek ignition today. I have some oil pooling under where the mechanical advance mounts. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

This is true. At the time I thought the carbs were the problem, but I should have done testing to know forsure. Looking back I dont think they were ever the problem, just didn't want to spend $65 per pod when I knew I wanted the vm carbs in the long run. But, that could have waited. Lesson...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

I dont have the original fuse setup.I appreciate everyone's input. I'll look into getting the dynatek setup. Is it odd that engine won't fire on 2 and 3 since they do have spark? When it cranks it doesn't sound remotely close to firing. I only ask because I have a read alot about bikes only...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

It started to run bad after the clutch cable adjustment/running out of gas and swapping fuel filter (all same day). That was a week or so after I bought it. Before that, it ran good minus the issues i had with the short in circuit breaker that I swapped for a fuse. Here is my description from my...

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

EDIT: Tom, I have a mechanical.advance setup. I'm still at work and not familiar with the different ignition systems, until i learn here is a picture of the signal generator (I think? If it's the same as the pick up/pulse coil)

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

EDIT: replaced ignition with Dynatek S, now have spark at all 4 plugs. Shifting focus to figure out why fuel isn't making it to the plugs, I will crank the motor several times and plugs are dry. New to the GS scene! or 80's bikes in general for that matter. I'm sure this post will reflect that...
