A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Weak idle until hot

You're right Rob. I meant "put the bike in neutral", not first gear.

    Weak idle until hot

Use Shell Rotella T4 or T6 15W-40. Your clutch and valve train will thank you. As for the idle, it's an odd pattern if it idles ok when cold, then goes through a temp range where it idles poorly, then gets hotter and idles better. With the clutch pulled in agrravating the issue, it points...

    SoCal - Here's an '82 Katana, not bad! And an '82 GS1100G - $8500 each. Not mine.

That 1100G still ahs original shocks and rubber brake lines on it. I'm guessing it's still going to need $500-$1000 in parts to make it daily rider reliable and safe. The Wife probably told him he needs to get rid of one or the other. It's obvious which one he's at least halfway willing to...

    Bike randomly died while riding.

If your compression is really that low, I doubt you could get the bike started, let alone running down the road. Are you sure you had a good seal on the spark plug holes when checking?

    Tires Online

I'll second that. Lot's of places have a "low price guranatee" where they'll match whatever you find somewhere else. Why bother with all that rigamarole? Just buy the least expensive source with the biggest warehouse (so you get fresh tires) and be done with it. It usually takes 3-4 days from...

Where to get OEM valve cover gasket

When looking for parts for old bikes and cars, ebay is your friend. NOS OEM Suzuki Gasket 1982-83 GS850 11173-45011-H17 | eBay They cylinder head gasket is not so critical to be OEM, I"ve had good luck with aftermarket gaskets there. Base gaskets are a different story.

    Bike randomly died while riding.

The OEM coils on the '70s-'80s UJMs are very robust and reliable. Failures are extremely rare. Which is one reason why they can be hard to troubleshoot, because they aren't part of the "usual suspects" group of issues with these bikes.

    Bike randomly died while riding.

I had an '81 GS750E that ran great, but every once in a while, it would suddenly start sputtering, lose most of it's power, and die. I'd let it cool off for 10-15 minutes, then it would start right up again, and run down the road just fine for a while. It drove me and one of our other resident...

GS550 with Mikuni Dual Throat Carb, No Info

I'm not surprised. The 16 valve '83-'86 GS550E/ES/L models were not made in great numbers, and had a tendency to wipe crankshafts if used for racing for extended periods of time. They had many parts unique to that bike only. I had an '83 I used for racing in '86 and '87. They were very...

83 GS1100E Front Master Cylinder Options

The nice thing about Ed's solution is that it works fine, and appears to be a stock (unless one is truly a GS1100 expert) master cylinder. And yeah, the anti-dive. I have block off plates on two of my anti-dive equipped bikes, and still functional anti-dive on the other. Oddly enough, I've...

Fuel hose size from peacock to tee connectors between carbs

Polyurethane is flexible, fuel resistant, and good for at least 10 years. It is also "grippy" and seals tightly. I have used the 5/16" fuel line from Cycle Recycle in Indianapolis since I moved here in 2004. Never had a problem. It doesn't get hard after a few years like the fuel line Suzuki...

    Relay upgrades for '79 GS850G

I did that to a couple of my GSes about 18 years ago. That was one of the "things to do to a new-to-you GS" back in the day. Gained between 1 - 1.5 volts at the coils. These bikes are cold starting, one crank and fire up wonders. I was reminded of it today when I did a brain fart and installed...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

That looks really good, and it's a close up shot. If all the opther pieces come out that well, (the tank is the toughest), it will be a great, professional-looking job for a fraction of the cost of a professional paint job. The last couple quotes I got for painting old GS/KZ style bike parts...

PARTZILLA - Carb Boots and Clamps Issues

Your problem is with Suzuki, not Partzilla. Evidently Suzuki has superceded the original part with something else, and it isn't quite right. Partzilla can't keep track of every part from every manufacturer that gets superceded with something else, and test every part to make sure it works...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

The GS650E side covers are much flimsier than the side covers on most other GS models. I dunno why, but they are. Very prone to breaking. Mke sure you have soft grommets, that helps. Old hardened rubber is much more likely to cause a breakage.
