A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Cross-pipe repair.

The Suzuki crossover pipes are the first to rust out, imo. They're very vulnerable to road fling and moisture under there.... As a quick fix, funky, not guaranteed but has worked well enough for me, You can try "hvac foil tape". Several makes, commonly available, but check it out here at 3M...

    Spark Plugs

well, no, not the only reason. The resistance of the OEM spec plugs, caps, coils and BlackBox (or points if you have them instead) is calculated to "shape" the spark so it's just right at the right place in combustion. There's no doubt experts that change everything for better performance etc etc...

    1982 GS300L Not Running Well

Those tiny ball bearings are probably for the "choke"(aka "enricher" for starting) ...there's a rod that goes across the carbs that activates this and the little balll bearings go into tiny holes (with tiny springs they sit on) on the carb body to apply friction to that rod so it doesn't...

    Acceptable stator output???

FH are "field effect" and commonly MOSFET (metal oxide field effect transistor) as opposed to SH which are SCR.("silicon controlled rectifiers" ) The MOSFET type are newer tech..it's matter of speed when they turn on and off, and thereby, without too much explanation, theoretically a cooler...

    Acceptable stator output???

I did say that in my first response to chuck's question... I don't get this I'd need an explanation.while (especially!) a shunt R/R might keep impedance/load pretty steady, it's still subject to rpm and obviously it and all the other components entrained add doubt. I suppose a lightbulb to...

    Hello from Southern England

I wonder if the gsx400 or GS450 doesn't have the same exhaust? and fenders? They're just a year or so beyond yours ....and mine look very similar to your first bike. You'd probably have to put slipon mufflers on but very-similar-looking are available albeit the chrome on many these days is a...

    Acceptable stator output???

That's why the lightbulb tests are somewhat reassuring per the stator ALONE... It's closer to a short circuit across the leg so there's a load that approaches its real world use without being complicated by any of the bike's issues. ...you can see that with the bulbs in the above that 80VAC...

    Acceptable stator output???

These tests never revealed anything wrong because theseexamples are rewound stators ... I was tinkering to devise simpler, um "better" tests...but there's this, too. as an idea to compare stator legs with some real current in the circuit without needing the engine spinning. It also uses...

    Acceptable stator output???

here's three 60 watt bulbs at 2500 rpm but if you used one at a time and measured light.....the picture is crummy but the meter is showing 36.8VAC I think. .

    Acceptable stator output???

The simplest answer tho' unsatisfying, is, when you are testing stator for voltage, current is basically zero apart from driving the multimeter. but, Voltage testing is not useless-it tells you that the windings are the same, comparing them....and can pinpoint to the shorted winding* BUT it...

    Hello from Southern England

Naturally! You don't ever want to be tempted to scavenge either good bike for duplicate parts :) Happened to me-the "parts" bike I bought is just too good so I had to find a third to supply both runners! Just a few pieces off the parts bike has saved me Big $..it's a real comfort to have...

    Vacuum petcock

This one, for a GSX400EX, has the pipe facing fwd...but they are chunky ..and many places will offer the wrong one as replacement: part 44300-44171 (below) is NOT the same as 44300-4470 even if the screw-hole fit is the same. i don't know where to get a new 44171-with similar difficulties...

Attrition in available tires for 1000G What is recommeded now?

Yes, I had them on the 650G which is similar tyre size to the op's...they were a tight fit on my rims where the Avons weren't and they didn't leak on the rims like the Avons did.
