    paint code question

Hello to you all.............................I have a bit of a problem trying to find the paint code for my bike. Tried the search on this forum and checked out the suppliers, but I did not find the code for my model year.

Here's the problem - this is a 1984 GS 750E. There were no 1984 gs 750's imported into the US so I have been unable to find a listing. There were 1983 GS 750's and 1985 GS 700's but NO 1984 GS 750.
In Canada we did get a 1984 GS 750, and that is what I have.

I tried going to an auto paint supplier to have the paint matched but the electronic device/scanner used to read and match the paint needs a certain amount of completely flat surface on the fuel tank or side covers. They cannot get a good read as decals and slightly curved surfaces get in the way.
The color is very close to fire engine red - and it is the original paint that is on the bike.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    thank you.

FWIW, those scanners are only going to match the closest code they have in their system. And your paint probably isn't the same color it was originally. Are you trying to do a touch-up or a "correct" paint job?

I'll be watching this closely, colorite etc couldn't give me a match for mine either

Good luck, I've tried a bunch of auto ones without really getting anywhere close, your red *might* be slightly easier.

If you are sneaky you might be able to take a sidecover into the shop & test some out on the reverse then simply wipe off before they dry

With Red you also have a good selection of ladies nail polish that you can try too......

Find another auto paint store. Better stores will have a color match guy that can whip you up a batch in a couple of hours for a nominal fee.

Dan, if you need some paint I can recommend a store to you (I have some primer and clear as well so all you need is the base color).

Thanks for the responses guys. I have 2 areas, one on each side of the tank, that need attention. Each area is approx 2" x 2" square, just above the top of the cylinder head where the fuel tank comes closest to the head. The gap between fuel tank and cam cover is only 1/8" or so when the tank is on the bike. My guess, through the years somehow the tank got to rub on the cylinder head and caused the paint to erode away. It was left unattended and eventually moisture got in and started rusting. The previous owners never looked after this and over the years the rust just spread........................till i got my paws on it. Other than that the original paint is actually very good.
But the damaged areas are to big for nail polish application.

            Dsrop Dink a line

he has/had the paint codes for the GS family

And he's in Australia so you may have better luck with getting
            a non US paint code.

                BikeBandit OEM Paint codes

I dont know if they have it for every model but I have been able to find the color code sheet for but my 1981 GS750EX and 1983 GS1100ED. Do an OEM parts look up and look for one of the views like Exhaust but it will be a color codes chart.
