I have been around this forum for some years now, and have read quite a few threads on dead a dyna s . More than should be maybe? Thinking of getting a dyna 2000 instead

My Dyna S is dead
I was out for a ride yesterday and the bike started acting up on the highway. Stopped in a parking lot and fiddled with it for a while, pulled the plugs and plugs # 2&3 werent sparking. Left it for a while to cool down, hoping that it was overheated coils. Ended up limping home running on 2 cyls. Did some troubleshooting and coils are fine, dyna s is bad.

I've never seen a dead Dyna S... Seen a dead Dyna 2000 though!
I think all electronics subject to high temps & bad vibration are destined to fail at some point. Maybe yours was the Monday morning batch.1980 GS1000G - Sold

Many of the Dyna-S ignitions are killed rather than just die. Both high and low voltage spikes can hurt them. Once you get a new ignition in the bike, make sure the regulator is working correctly, and the battery is good.

The problem with a Dyna S is it is designed to take the worst kind of vibration and temperature.
A Dyna 2000 is more complicated and therefore all things being equal is more likely to fail, however it is not all mounted on the end of the crank.
I'm still using a OEM ignition with mechanical advance it there is nothing wrong with it.

This happened at the worst possible time. I am moving in just over a week
Had to pay extra for shipping to get it here in time
I have had it a couple of years or so, but the stock one seems to have lasted for 30 some odd years. One of the reasons I went with it, was because it was supposed to be more reliable.

I have mine at Dyna's lab in MT right now. Lasted 18 months. Did have a stator failure about 6 months ago, not sure if that contributed or not. They told me they will either repair it (possibly at no charge) or if it has to be replaced it'll be $65 or so. They come with a 1 year warranty and I'm over that. Better than buying a new one but looking at probably being off the road a total of three weeks, and that sucks.

I have had charging system problems in the last year, mostly low voltage.
Should the power to my my dyna come from power out from my relay? I have it on the old power wires to the coils which is drooped 1-2v or so.
What do I have to do before sending it back to Dynatek? Can I just send the plate?

I got the new Dyna today, looks different than the old one, the sensors/pickups are much smaller. An upgraded part maybe?

Overall there is no change in functionality on the units, the smaller pickups are just the result of components getting smaller.
