GS1100EZ/ED Replacement : Red Universal Digital Gear Indicator

I looked for other reference to this but after scanning 5-7 pages under search I could not find anything really relevant. So here is a new thread.

I just received one of these and gave it a little test. $5.20 shipped !!!!

Nice bright red gear indicator (I think they also come in Green). When in Neutral it turns Green. It is a 9 segment display so it does a nice "N". Even better it fits almost perfectly in the 82/83 GS1100E gear indicator window. Simple wiring, Bullet connector is red +12V as would be expected. As you ground each other wire you get one of 1,2,3,4,5 (in Red) or N (in Green).

I can't see my stock one (day or night ) and I have paid $40 for new NOS units.

The only down side seems to be it is so small I am going to have an awful lot of epoxy to fill in to fix it into the OEM case. I'll also wire it straight into the gauge cluster so the OEM harness connects just as it originally did.

Awesome. If it were me, I'd put it behind a tiny window of smoked glass or plastic so that the non-lit segments aren't quite as visible in the daylight.

I am constantly amazed at how a hobbyist like me can order cheap electronic gadgets from the other side of the world in single quantities. Which reminds me, I should pick up a couple volt meters.

That is pretty much how teh EZ/ED gear indicators are. There is a plastic cube box 1.5"x1.5"x1.5" with a clear lense and then the gauge cluster cover has a thick plastic lens as well. This gear indicator fits perfectly in the opening of the small cube.

My ED gauges are all red, and I have red illumination on my 2 1/4" gauges so this should go well. I just want to get all the electrical projects together so I can do them all at once. WOLO, Gear Indicator, Grip Warmers, Security system, reinstall the multi gauge.

Can you give me a better idea on the wire connections?

The description says you need electronic speedo and tach, but there seem to be a BUNCH of wires.

If it can handle a common feed with individual grounds for each gear (much like the GS is wired), I might consider getting one for my Wing.

Does it infer the gear by comparing revs and speed? The SportVue Hud did that, and sucked at it. I disconnected the rpm sensor because it was so annoyingly bad. At low revs, it couldn't sense enough difference in wheel speed to guess the correct gear. Sometimes wrong by 2. It also guessed neutral if the clutch was in for too long (~500ms). Hopefully working from digital gauges works better, but it will still be clueless whenever the clutch isn't fully engaged. The stock GS reading of the shift drum position is far superior.

Still, inferring from speed and RPM is better than nothing. I'm curious to hear how this one works out.

Interestingly enough, my Wing has a bundle of wires in the harness that connect to a similar shift drum position sensor, but don't go anwhere. There is no light (or series of lights) on the dash to show your gear. Not even one in the accessory catalog. Aftermarket companies have cashed in on this and made them available, but at a VERY premium price.

I was hoping that all the wires on this unit would work similar to the stock GS unit (and the Wing's). Hey for that price, it's worth it, but I'd still like to hear from Pos first.

If there's shift drum position sensing wiring, It sounds like a pretty simple Tinyduino project. Even I should be able to handle the coding. No, that was not me volunteering. Well, not this year, anyway. You'd probably want an "R" too, right?

I guess this might be true if you have a computer to calculate the gear, but nothing to do with this product.

As long as your motorcycle has an electronic speedometer and an electronic tachometer (rev counter) you'll always know which gear your bike is in with a single glance.
                Anything more would be Verbose

It is identical to a GS other than the wire colors are diff.

Nope, already have one of them.

The "R", a green Neutral light and "OD" for fifth gear are my only gear indicators.

Actually, on a Wing, it's more like Ridiculous.

                          Wing cafe

Some time ago I saw an early Goldwing set up in a minimalist, cafe style. Never saw another one, though.
1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

Plenty of them to see at Naked GoldWings.
(The Bike of the Month that shows up in the link is a great example.)

Interestingly enough, the Wing was the first Japanese full litre motorcycle, and was designed to challenge the KZ900 as a "superbike".

Once someone discovered how smooth it was, and that accessories could be added, its touring heritage was created.
