Removing carbon from piston tops & other places, head,etc.

I have come across this product that makes the cleaning of the carbon off the piston crowns a real breeze and saves any scratches, gouges, etc on the softer aluminium parts. It probably works ok on valves and combustion chambers too.

The trick is to let the parts soak for an hour or so to soften up the carbon and then it just wipes off with a workshop towel, rag. Sometimes two or three soaks are needed. Just wipe away the softened residue each time and re-soak.

It is called Wynn's ULTRA POWER 3. It is a Professional Formula and not for retail sale. I got mine from a mechanic friend.

To clean the piston tops I just cut a jam tin in half and put about 1/2" of solution in the bottom and put the piston in upside down so the crown was covered with the solution. I let it soak for about one hour.

The piston top was quite shiney, have you tried it on the carbs yet!

I used Purple Power. Only a couple bucks per gallon and totally safe for the environment. Like Ray said though, it's an overnight procedure with a stuff like this though and maybe a little brushing with a toothbrush or something.

Hey Sharpie. That's good info on the product. I need to get some more and try my carbs in it too. To see if it removes the varnish, etc. I reckon it would if it removes carbon deposits. I was surprised at how it seems to melt the carbon into a soft gummy type of substance that can be wiped away with a rag. If the varnish in the carbs melts to a similar substance then it would probably need to be blown out with compressed air and dunked again to ensure all the muck is out.

If you cannot find winns products, i clean the carbon built-up with a Mercury Marine spray.
Its called Engine Tuner, the instruction state that you clean the inside of the engine when it run.I just spray the contents of the can in a jar and put thing to clean in it.This stuff work like magic on carbs (green varnish, brass jet cleaning) and cleaning carbon built-up.
Available locally in Mercury-mercruiser dealers.

I just put water in the air intake as I rev the bike up it blows the carbon off of everything in the head. But wow, thats clean, excellent

The Wynn's stuff is probably something similar to carbon tet. You used to be able to buy it off the shelf but no more. Up until about 10 years ago you could buy Energine that was still carbon tet but now it's just naptha. I still have a can of carbon tet I'm saving for the day I really need it.

Carb dip removes carbon nicely if you live in a place that still allows the stuff. Takes a couple of soak periods, followed by mild scrubbing, but the carbon will come right off.
