That is the infamous self cancelling turn signal box.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

Self cancelling?
I know where my blinker unit is, what does this thingy do? Turn off the blinkers after some time?

They are supposed to turn off while rolling after a minute or so. Mine actually still works. The self-cancelling turn signal system consists of a control unit and a speedometer-mounted speed sensor used in conjunction with a turn signal relay. After the turn signal system has been engaged it should cancel within about 9-10 seconds when a speed of approximately 15 kph (9 mph) has been reached.

Ok, has anyone here taken the unit off? I sure would like to get rid of it. Do all the wires in it run parallel straight into the sigs, or is this another suzy wiring spectacle that I need a scientist for?

Why do you want to get rid of it? It's not that heavy, so removal won't improve performance that much.
If the whole "auto-cancel" bit bothers you, just control your signals manually.
Yes, there are people that have removed them because they did not work. I don't know if any special adaptations are required in the event of removal. If you do remove it, I'll make you an offer to have it as a spare unit for my two bikes that use one.

I don't know if you've seen any pics of my Kat, but my aim is to make her as simple as possible, and eliminating any non essential wires from the harness.
My biggest vise with any project is cosmetic, and wiring. My harness will end up being more simplistic, bundled up neat with the right wrap and end to end laser labeling, all new connectors soldered and cased. All this is gonna happen when I take the frame in for painting (black).
What I may end up having to do is taking out all the sig wiring and putting in a new system, but with an LED blinker unit and t. sigs. She's got a-ways to go, but we're getting there.

It's pretty easy to bypass. Get a schematic. Trace the wires on the schematic, you'll see. However, you swill have to control the signals manually afterwards. At least that is true on my bike (78 GS1000). That's no biggie though.

Mine still works perfectly ... Every once in awhile I even forget to flip off the signals, so it's nice to have the automatic fallback. The only caveat is that on the highway signaling for an exit I know I have to repeatedly hit the signal to "reset" the cycle and keep the light flashing until I want it off. This has become "automatic" for me now so I don't even give it a thought.
I'd leave it on if it's working, but if you DO decide to remove it be sure to offer it up here for sale ... somebody will probably want it! I have no idea what the going rate is for these things, though.
