    81 GS750 Repaint

Well I am pretty committed to doing three paint jobs before the end of the year and worse 2 of them re black with the third one 3 colors black, red and silver with decals. Anyway I got my work cut out for me considering the weather is now turning and the rain seems to me imminent.

I'm getting close to finishing bike #1 which is my first street bike an 81 GS750EX. It will probably be for sale soon. So if you are in or near So Cal keep it in mind if you are looking for a stock square headlight GS750

    EDIT: Old like doesn't work
I uploaded a bunch of pics at photo bucket but now not sure how much resolution those will have.

Bills has about 3-4 coats of clear but no RUNS

Here are the ones for the GS750. It now has about 7-8 coats total but spraying in the colder weather (60 vz. the normal 85 deg) I got some runs even though it looks very wet. I need to work on them after it hardens a bit more.

A pic of progress to date is attached. I'm using PPG professional paints and reproduction decals. This is sort of a practice run as I need to do Bill's bike next (Chef1366) and then my street fighter GSXR.

It takes a lot of practice cause I'm using my 9.95 Harbor freight guns

Excellent work - I wish I had the talent & patience to do such nice work....
I thought the '81 model had the round headlight though, as least mine did.

Great job, make sure you show it off when it's completed!

beautiful work mate! You picked a great model to start with too I don't think you're going to have any problems selling that bike or any others you produce. Well done! If only was in the same country

Someone changed it out then. The 80-81s have the square light. 82 had a round light.

I hope to do something similar with a spare set of body parts I have for my 81. How does one practice painting? Does this mean sanding off the early attempts to do it over? I have this ugly image of a half inch thick layer of bumpy paint on a tank.

        Woodsie

Let me correct myself. The E models have square lights, the L models did not.

I wonder how those low VOC paints, particularly the water borne stuff, compares to the old fashion high VOC paints in terms of durability? Here in Los Angles County solvent based paints are being phased out so I’ve recently started mail ordering from http://www.tcpglobal.com/ in San Diego county to skirt the rules.

              Ed,
I looked at the website and started to order but did not really want to figure it out. So on the spur of the moment I just went back to the local paint store just to get the primer. Well in the end I just bought the whole boat load of paints/primer/sealers. I'm doing the EX, Bills LED and GSXR

The Clear is the same solvent based 4:1 as with the high VOV so no change there. The sealer is more expensive (added another $100 for a quart) but it seems less porous than the sandable stuff so now downside there other than cost. Part of the reason for sealer is the paint is not as thick. The color coat doesn’t need to be durable as the clear is what takes all of the abuse.

The other interesting think is that black paint goes on with a green tint, and as it dries it goes off jet black. I have been trying to shoot everything while the paint booth is above 70 degrees. The guy at the paint store suggested using a hair dryer and keep the air moving in the booth to promote and insure the color base was dry. Other than 1 hour minimum dry time between color and clear it seems to be fine and I have no concerns. There is less acetone to clean up as well.

Thanks guys on the complements, I'll be posting up pics once the clear goes on. Even though it is supposed to rain all next week, looks like today is beautiful and tomorrow should be as well. Rain starts late Sunday or Monday.

TPC Global is in San Diego and they still sell solvent based paints like PPG DP Epoxy Primer. I love that stuff since it works both as a sealer and a primer depending on how you mix it. It also adheres to plastic as long as the slow (201) catalyst is used - no worry about adding a flex additive. I also bought some 3.5 VOC House of Kolor U35 clear - good stuff, and cheaper than PPG. Hope they don't discontinue that stuff in CA.

Looks good Jim but where are the high resolution photos? We need PHOTOS, and lots of them!!!!

Regarding that bottle...for some reason drinking and painting go hand and hand. Must be a mixing of chemicals thing. When Salty Dan and I painted this last go round he showed up with a 12 pack, and they didn't go to waste.

Looks pretty damn good I think. With the emblems on the side of the tank it should be spot on!
