starting issue

I assume this is the correct subforum for this question.


Three days ago, I went out to start the bike and it fired right up with little choke thrown at it. It was maybe 50*, I was really impressed with that. Yesterday, I went out to a similar temperature and the bike had zero desire to catch at all. Its getting spark and fuel, but not even a stumble.

Are these bikes THAT cold blooded or is something out of adjustment? I would like to think the temps aren't the issue here.

Something is out of whack, most likely several things. It should start with a flick of the button, even if it's well below freezing if you have the right amount of choke set.

What maintenance have you done so far?

The two most-likely suspects are:
1: lack of valve adjustment
2: wrong fuel mixture, which could be wrong "choke" setting or dirty carbs.

Carbs have been gone through recently. Though the gas isn't "fresh". I went out today and at ~27* it caught and idled. Only difference is that it was on the tender last night. I always forget that bikes hate voltage drops much more than cars. Once running, its great though. Are these siamese carbs hard to rebuild? I have a spare set sitting on my work bench.

And valves have been adjusted in the last 1000 miles. I think it was a voltage issue. Or I'm hoping at least.

Do a search for "Stator Papers" and follow the step by step to test all your charging system. Needs to be done even if you aren't having issues. terrylee
