    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1978 GS1000 electrical help.

hey guys,
i just got a 78 gs 1000 and am rebuilding it and for the most part the only thing that i am worried about it the electrical. i want to eliminate anything and everything that i dont HAVE to have (as far as electrical goes). such as blinkers and such. would the best way be to strip out the whole harness and trim it up and remove the wires i dont want or is there a shortcut premade harness i could buy or whats the best way to do this. thank you for all of your help.

Will this be a street legal bike? Have you already verified what items you MUST have per your local laws? When you say "and such" what exactly do you mean?

I did what he's talking about with my 850 but Im thinkin if he's got a decent Skunk we may be able to talk him out of it.

Besides, I dont think any laws require silly clutch and sidestand safety switches.

Yea, I agree with you on the last part. I'm just concerned when someone says they'll get rid of turn signals. We are already hard enough for cage drivers to see, let's not make it any easier on them.

Sigs or not, assume they cant see ya and it wont matter.

Well, let's just assume they might see you making that left hand turn across them if your turn signals are working! I doubt they are all out to get us.
 
Get a wiring diagram for your bike .
Blow it up into a practical , readable size .
Get a highlighter pen .
Follow and check each wire (with a multimeter) .
Clean or replace the connectors at each end of the wire .
Check it is connected to where it should go .
Colour that wire in on the diagram .
Go to the next wire and repeat .
You'll be surprised how quickly the entire diagram becomes coloured .
Rather than cut out any wiring you don't "need" , simply disconnect the wires and tape both ends . It's a right barstard down the track if you decide you want some tricky little indicators and you've chopped the wires out . Hacking up your wiring loom is , I believe , not necessary . If you plan on having a minimilist bike , consider removing the stock harness and making a new one . It's really not that hard .

If your worried about your wiring just get a new OEM harness and don?t plug-in what you don?t want. You got 30years out of the first one. How are you going to beat that? Or you could chop-up what you got and could end up replacing stator, regulator, coils or ignitor.

wow!! thank yall very much for all of the input i have been waiting to get some replies on many different forums with no luck. thank yall very much!!!

the bike does not run right now i have the carbs off right now soaking in pine sol and water and also the ignitio is missing. and many different little things that need to be fixed or replaced. it is definatley a project. i am wanting to relocate the ignition remove the cluster on the bars and relocate the speedo, and eliminate as many unnecessary switches as possible bare minimum. as far as the law and street legal goes: yes i want it to be street legal, and yes i want to remove all signals and keep headlight and tailight. i know some may think it is dangerous and it is but riding a motorcycle all together is dangerous to most. so i wanna go with a bare looking style .. thank all of you guys for your help. any more input is greatly appreciated

Good advice other than the fact that "new OEM harness"es are not available anymore.:mad:

This is exactly what I did with the 850. Kinko and my wife hooked me up with a large poster board size of the 850 harness.
Cost me about 25 bux if I can recall.
