A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anyone have any good links or guides for where I should begin tearing down, cleaning, and rebuilding a '78 GS1000 Engine?
I was going to start right off with the service manual. Is that a good idea or is there any particular teardown on this site that walks through some caveats that the bike may have?

Thanks!

Go by the manual, but there is a great u tube 4-5 part on how to rebuild gs 550. Sorry I'm not good at pasting stuff. But if you put in gs 550 engine rebuild it will come up under u tube. terrylee

Thanks terrylee! I will definitely look for that video series and if I find it I will link it in this post.

Valve cover breather

Why are you tearing it down?

Leaking oil?

Just thought I'd tear down at least the top end to clean it and also get it painted and zinc coated. Not leaking oil. Do you think it's too ambitious to try to tear it down? Been sitting for 10+ years although I did get it to start once just the other day.

I would check valve clearances and rebuild the carbs. That should be all the girl needs unless she has been severely neglected.

Thanks for the advice! I bet you're right that is probably all it needs to start. But it has been left outside :\ lot of pitting on the engine

You should be aware that tearing down a 1000 is going to run you $500-1,000 for gaskets, seals, cam chain slippers and all of the minor stuff

I'm with Flatline - just get a valve cover gasket, check the valves, clean the carbs and see how it runs. You can scrub or soda blast the motor to make it pretty after that.

Okay thanks Big T! I figured it would be about as much for various parts for a teardown. Thank you for the advice!
