Riding and setting in traffic with it in the PRIme position will not hurt anything. All your doing is making the PRIme an ON position as if the carbs were pulling a vacuum like normally would happen. As was stated dont leave it in PRIme..always move it back to the ON psoition if the engine isnt running.

Smell the pipe...smell like gas or oil????

Pipe smells like gas .... and yes I removed plugs , it appears as though its number 3 is soaked with gas , and all four cylinders are sparking ...
I thought for sure yesterdayproblem was solved when I was told to check the vacume line going to #3 carb and there was infact gas in that line .
But after plugging up the vacume line and diconnecting from tank , this problem still occoured ...
Im no mechanic ! But now im thinking something has to be incorrect with the float bowl heights or a jet for that number 3 carb ..
Correct me if im wrong please ... lol looking to try any suggestions ??
Thx

Smells like gas, that's good. Carbs are easier than engines to fix. Without reading back through the whole thread, have you been in the carbs before? A float stuck wide open could do this, sometimes the float can get stuck on the gasket, or stuck in goo from old gasoline on the bottom of the bowl. Did you try whacking it on the side of the float bowl? Sometimes it works.
Try testing the fuel level in the bowls as the engine runs, that will tell you something.

Yeah when I originally fired this baby up I had an issue with gas over flowing . And you told me to tap on the bowl , and when I did that it stopped the fuel from coming out the overflow hose ..
Last weekend I pulled the carbs and just removed the bowls on all four carbs , toIinspect and see if something looked wrong or was out of place , I was wanting to see if a float bowl was sticking .. removed all float bowls and cleaned float bowl needles in all four carbs . Jets didnt look to bad ! Was impressed with how clean it was in there !!
Didnt do a dip .. but blasted carb cleaner and put a needle through all holes and jets etc .

As for testing float bowl levels while running .. last night I did look for a bolt or something I could drill outto do this . I guess that is the only way ofchecking level of gas on the bowl . By removing drain plug and having a matching bolt thats drilled with a piece of tubing attached ?

Smell the pipe...smell like gas or oil????

Oh and once I have noticed this happen ... I have a tiny pin hole right at the weld where #3 pipe adjoins to #4 pipe .and after a 1 hr ride I parked the bike in thedriveway and was watching the last few puffs of smoke comeout the rightpipe as the bike was off and noticed a small puddle of gas begin to form right under that #3 pipe .. when i looked more closely and wiped with finger and smealt , it was gas ! I dunno ...

You got a problem in number 3 carb I would say for sure. Also, I have had plugs that sparked nice and pretty outside the engine but wouldnt installed. I would throw a different ( or swap a plug ) just for chits and grins to see what happens.

Ill give that a try Chuck .. swapping out plug !!

Thx for your help
And ill be pulling the carbs again ..

Just had another thought. Do you have the old plug caps with the ceramic resistors in them?? To check, pull off 1 or 4 and look inside and youll see the plug socket is slotted. Unscrew it and dump it into your hand and see if theres one in there. If so, remove all mof them and replace with a 1/8 diameter piece of copper or brass rod cut to the right lengths.

Note that 2 and 3 have a spring that goes into the cap first, then the resistor, and then the slotted socket thing. Those resistors fail and youll have a weak to no spark and thus very poor fuel ignition on the cylinders.

Damn ... thx for the thought !! Lol wheels are turning are they ? Haha I appreciate it ..
I removed all 4 plugs , cleaned em all , then putthe plugsfrom # 3&4 into 1 &2 .. switched em all around . Noticed my cap for #1 was cracked , luckily had some spares , cuzz I just replaced all thecaps on my 650 ..

I also checked all sparks after switching plugs .. all 4 have awsome blue spark !!:)

Do these old 78 gs 1000 e typically run hot ? Like my 83 650 would get hot ...this 1000 is HOT !!

Cracked plug caps can short to the block before the spark gets to the plug tip, but outside the bike of course the cap is far away from the metal and wont arch across. And yes they do run pretty hot..you need a few fans in front of the engine to keep it cool while you tinker.

Hey Chuck . In regards to heat I was referring to yesterday. I took a 1 1/2 hr ride in the country .. & after about an hr the engine is damn hot , no stopping what so ever doing approx 90 - 120 km/h id think the bike would be cooler with the wind blowing on it at those speeds .. as for the cracked plug cap , found that bugger the hard way !! Lol reached to pull cap off engine while running to check spark , the moment I touched it ... hahaha
I thought switching the plugs around and adjusting gaps helped with the smoking issue up till 20 min ago .. just rode into work and once you ride the bikefor an hr then get stuck Iin traffic . That right pipe still lets out a big puff of greyish smoke everytime you come to a stop !!

I took the petcock out 2 days ago and took it appart , gave the spring a slight pull , as well as the bent metal spacer ring . Just bent it a little more , then re assembled ... and I havent scene gas in the vacume line thus far since doing so ...
If I could also ask for a suggestion in regards to oil ?
I have done 2 oil changes on this bike in the last month , well within 2 days of changing the oil and filter the oil is black !! Im not running the best oil just castrol 10w-40 ..
Im wanting to do another oil change this weekend , any suggestions on a good oil ? Or possibly switch to synthetic ? The oil filters I have been using are just fram ...

If it wasn't turning black, it wouldn't be doing it's job. It's picking up all the dirt in your engine and keeping it in suspension just like a good detergent oil is supposed to do. You don't really need to change it again.
