Well after a couple of years of illness and one year recovered I have decided that it is time to re-build/refurbish my GS1000. It was in poor condition when I drove it home and has not ran since. I am planning on running the engine and checking things out before I really get into it. After cleaning I will paint the engine. I will start posting pictures soon.

Now that you have recovered, time for the bike to recover. Sounds like an excellent plan.
Looking forward to seeing another one on the road.

Weather should be nice tomorrow so I will get the bike outside and start cleaning. I have already bought K&N air filters a jet kit and 4 into one. I have heard it is relay hard to get the bike running right when doing this. Any thoughts or experience with doing this?

Just dont have CV carbs lol. As long as they are mechanical carbs should be fine to tune.

Some pictures.

It looks like there is a leak from the base gasket, any chance it is just road grime? Does anyone know what causes the yellowing on the carbs, perhaps fuel was leaking from the tank and dripping onto the carb?

Looks like your base gasket is leaking. Good time to freshen the rings, lap the valves, replace valve seals, etc.
Carbs will need to be rebuilt anyway, all that road grime will go away.
Best of luck.

I just love those GS1000's.
You will too when you get it up to speed.
Sure does look like a '79 to me.
But what's up with the carbs? it has the manual '78 choke linkage, but then I see the pull up choke knob by the handlebar mount. How does that work for you?

And then I see you got the spoked wheels and single disk up front something that doesn't come standard with the '79 E model.
Regardless, it'll be a great bike after you sort through it I'm sure.

Hi Sedelen, you got me wondering if this really was a 79. Well I checked the title and sure enough it says 79. As for the carbs and the choke it works either way with the pull knob or the lever. I am trying to figure out what to do with the wheels, new spokes silver and paint the aluminum or buff the aluminum and black spokes.

I don't know what it is, it has the chrome air box covers the '79 has, and the left rear peg is a '79, '78's were round. The choke pull knob was '79.
I do believe he case emblems were black and gold on the '79, even though
my '79 has black and silver, but my '79 was an early one, Aug 78 manufacture date, I think mine are original.
Unless you like the spokes you could get a set of aluminum wheels off E-bay. The seat will be different too, the '78 has longer square pattern on it. Check to see if you have a clutch safety switch, those were on the '79's. I think it's a '79, just can figure out that choke lever on it.

Sounds like this bike has some history, any disadvantage or advantage to the 78 Carbs. Also is there a way to figure out when it was built from the number on the frame? I am really looking forward to this project. I already have a bunch of goodies that I bought 2 years back. I like the spokes perhaps black spokes and black rims, but it may be cheaper to replace them with the cast wheels.

Post the frame number and I'll check it for you, also if you still have the decal on the left side of the head stock, verify it's the same number.

Cheers,

Edit; PS also post the Engine Number

I believe the 78 and 79 carbs are the same except for the choke lever location. 78 directly on the carb , 79 on the dash/handlebar, with cable to the carbs.

I have removed the carbs. You are all correct these must have been added it turns out the cable for the choke was not doing anything. I am thinking about mounting the engine on an engine stand just using the rear engine mounts. Has anyone done this or know if they are strong enough to support the engine?

Yip. No problem just using the rear mounts. Enjoy the rebuild and remember - lots of photos.

I didn't think the choke lever on the carb and the pull knob for the choke on the handlebar mount could both be functional.
Also, on the '79 there's an extra bolt securing the cylinder to the head,
in between the 2nd and 3rd headers. My '79 has it all built up but never machined for one, no bolt, probably because of it's early manufacture date, Aug 78.

A couple of other tell tale clues, the oil filter cover on the '79 doesn't have a drain bolt like the '78 did. I liked the drain bolt, so I put a '78 one on mine.
And, the front brakes are are different between the E and C (base) model.
The E having dual front brakes, I think the pads are smaller and the master cylinder different on the E. The wheels and tires sizes are also different between the C (base) and E model.
Also, your seat should be "stepped" a rise up for the passenger.

This is my little E,
it's far from perfect, but the real beauty is in the ride!

I have included a picture of the area between exhaust port 3 and 4. I don't think this seat is raised at the back. I am getting ready to pull the engine and put it on an engine stand. Do you have the specs of those bolts you are using to hold the exhaust system on (at the exhaust port)? I have included a picture of the front sprocket area, is it normally this messy in there? Your bike looks very cool, nice job. We have the same paint. I guess my bike is not an E.

I took the picture of the area between exhaust port 3 and 4 from the bottom. There is no bolt on top.
