I bought a 1982 GS850GL yesterday, and I have been looking at a new exhaust system for it. I was wondering if i would get better performance from a 4-into-1 system or a 4-into-2? Also, i keep finding exhausts that say for 80-81 models, but i cannot find one for a 1982 anywhere. Will the exhaust fit from the previous two years, or does anyone else have any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks for any replies.

check ebay they might have some nice stock pipes for cheap, not sure about the 4-1 though....

Jardine makes a 4-1 system for 82-83 GS850L, but its a flat black. No one makes a direct replacement Chrome exhaust for the 82's (that I can find). But the exhausts for the 80-81 will fit the bike and bolt up to heads, just the way the muffler mounts is a little different so you have to make up your own bracket to hang the muffler. I think both MAC and Vance/Hines make the 80-81 systems.

If I remember right I think MAC may have just started making a direct replacement muffler that fits the stock header pipes for an 82 GS850L. Check their website.

YAMA makes an exhaust that i've been told will fit. I don't remember the site it was on...exotic sportbike... i think. I saw a post on here somewhere from someone that had purchased it and was going to install it and say what he thought. If you find anotherone please post it...I have the same bike and am looking for exhaust also.

That exhaust will bolt right up to the head, but you'll have to make your own custom mount for the rear. You also might not be able to use your center stand with that exhaust, but I don't know for sure.

I have a Vance and Hines on my 82 850L and I really like it. I opened up my airbox when I put the pipes on and had to rejet. Runs real well now. Good performance sound but not too loud.

Did you have to do anything special to mount the VnH on your 82, or did it bolt right up?? Is it the chrome or black model.

I had to make one simple mounting bracket to mount the mega phone. It had a pretty good fit- it looks pretty good. If I remember right the exhaust was not listed for my 82 model year but it seems all the shaft drive (850, 1000?, 1100) are similar. I bought mine from Dennis Kirk. Now Im thinking about trying one of those X-pipes. Anyone have any experience with these on a GS?

Eric

I've never seen one personally, but I've heard the quality is very poor on them. There was a thread on GSR about a month ago on them.

Al gs850 's are two valve engines so why would'nt it work ?I have a vance\hinse system on mine
