    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

'79 850 Cam tensioner bolt hole partially stripped

Hi, "79 GS 850

I was putting my cam chain tensioner back on the bike (after putting in new O-rings etc in the tensioner), when I stripped out the first two or three threads of the upper right bolt hole where the tensioner is mounted to the block. Farther into the hole the threads are good.

This is the threaded hole for the smallest bolt (all three mounting bolts are different 6mm sizes). The little bolt will still grab but there isn't enough thread left to be reliable.

Is helicoil the way to go here? Any other suggestions?
 
Definitely helicoil. Your only two other reasonable options are drilling and tapping a larger bolt (which would require drilling a larger hole in the cam chain tensioner mount), or cold welding a stud in the stripped hole.

Go with a helicoil.
 
If only the first 2-3 threads are stripped, why not a longer bolt?
If you clean up the threads so the new bolt will go past the damaged threads and bite into the good threads and the hole is deep enough for a longer bolt, why not?
 
Thanks guys. I guess I could try a longer bolt and see what happens. Won't be any worse off than I am now if the rest pull out. I don't know much about this helicoil thing either, but from looking at other posts can probably pull it off if I'm not comfortable with a longer bolt.

longer bolt as KK says but if its a blind hole measure the depth first, are you sure it has the correct bolts to start with
 
Yeah its wierd how the "stock" bolt (I assume its stock, but might be a false assumption) seems a little short. I bought an allen head bolt that was the same size, if I had looked at the hole rather than the bolt I pulled out of there maybe I might have avoided this.
