    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Make of it what you will - however, who was it here put an ammeter on the phase leads and read a direct comparison of shunt v. series showing the differences in our alternators and regs.
It might be the Burgman benefits from an extra 30 years of inspired (!) thinking in the Suzuki electrical department.

The guy that started that thread is named Time Bandit, and he is a self trained "practicing to be an engineer" kinda guy. He needs a lot more practice !!!

With his lack of understanding of basic electrical engineering he has relied on inferential analysis devoid of the proper technical background to understand the problem. The result is that with this misguided knowledge of his, he has taken it upon himself to save the world and uphold the reputation of shunt regulation.

He is not 100% wrong in everything, just enough to come to the absolute wrong conclusion re: SERIES v.s. SHUNT. He can't be helped as he made up his mind long ago before he ever did his analysis.

I'm the one who did the current v.s. voltage plots of a MOSFET SHUNT R/R and the Compufire. Time Bandit claimed I fabricated the plots, later retracted that on another forum (not the aprila) but has persisted in his goal.

I got into it with him at a Buell Superbike forum, and after he and another guy claimed I had fabricated charts I sent them a MOSFET R/R to test them selves and they never did. After a year it was sent back unopened.


Tom has used a simple 60Hz AC current clamp and showed a large drop (like 1/2) in stator leg current drop when he switched the lights on v.s. off using an SH-775 (Series R/R). I don't recall but it is common knowledge that the stator current normally goes up when the lights are off not goes down.

God forbid anyone disagree with Posplyr on regulators, it's worse than a Oil Thread or Chain vs Shaft discussion.

Anytime you want to have a technical discussion just lay out your theories and well have a little (ie short) interchange.
 
This sounds like an individual in a diesel truck forum where I've had discussions about brakes, a devote member of the flat earth club. Does not matter if I point to technical articles, SAE papers, etc. We won't read them but he's right!

Well it takes all kinds. In addition to claims that I had fabricated the scope charts, he also claimed I was a shill for usmotoman.com because I listed them as the best price for a Compufire.

TB overlooked the fact that I had first (on the same page) listed Dennis Kirk part number and manufacturers part number as well.
 
I'm cheap and I don't buy into hype unless it proves true. When I finally located my AC clamp on meter, I figured it was time to get and test a SH-775-and I was getting tired of replacing stators. Due to the high frequencies involved, my testing numbers were only approximate, but the comparison between my old shunt SH-232 and the SH-775 is valid- stator leg current dropped from 11 amp to 6.8 amp at 4000 rpm. I don't see any reason to have your stator pump out more juice than bike needs at any moment.

Well, I'm very pleased with mine and keeping my fingers tightly crossed the rather elderly stator I pressed into service holds up. If I get a year or two out of that I'll be happy enough and will have a new one ready to put in it.
The other bike will have an SH-775 asap and the XS is a field coil type, iirc, so fewer worries there, but they're not unknown for alternator problems of their own.
