Hello to all!

I have a question regarding the airbox on my 1982 Gs1100gk. I'm doing the sealing project on this box and I'm wondering if there is supposed to be a snorkel on the backside or is there supposed to be just a plain opening there. Thanks for any insight.

Hi,

I thought all of the shafties had a snorkel on the airbox. It looks like this one does, but it's not a good angle.

Is your opening in the back on the bottom of the airbox? Here is what mine looks like.

If you do have a large opening in the back on the bottom of your airbox, chances are the snorkel has been broken off.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I have seen the back of the airbox on a couple of GKs, yes, there should be a snorkel. :-\\\

Yes, that is correct. Just finished a restore on my 1100gk2. What I have found is that it is a pretty tight fit with the snorkel on to reinstall the carbs. So, your PO probably took it off to make the install much easier.

Thanks a bunch guys. I thought there was supposed to be one,do you think not having one would have an effect on the carbs, I'm thinking I have a lean condition going on. And does anyone know were I can get one. You guys are great I have learned so much information on these bikes from the help recieved.

Just removing the snorkle wont matter as long as the rest of the airbox is there with a stock air filter, not a K&N

Well actually it does have a foam style K&N what do you think, are the originals paper? I did see k and n on the side its the tytpe you put some oil on

When I got my 1000 it was also missing the snorkel. The result for me was a monster flat spot. Once I got another snorkel and installed it problem solved. I think a lot of them get removed in the search for "more power" but the result is really a lean carb condition and the flat spot. You can try to cover part of the snorkel opening with duct tape as a temp fix but really should find a replacement IHMO. These bikes need the correct airflow to run properly.

The OEM is a foam filter, the K & N replacement (SU-1200) is a cotton gauze type filter. Usally E-bay is the easiest place to find a replacement airbox. I am pretty sure the G & L airboxes would both fit your bike as long as they look the same from the outside. Heres one that should fit at a pretty good price. Looks like it was taken off the sellers other airbox item for sale.

This filter is definetly all foam, and yes it seems to have a flat spot also. air mixture screws set at 3 1/2 out, when fired up cold it pops a little then after a few minutes get better. This bike starts on 3/4 choke after about two minutes when I crack the throttle it wants to bog I figure its still cold, after its really warmed up I can crack the throttle its alot better but still has a little flat spot, if I take it up too about 4k feels like it wants to surge some. This is what I have done so far.

1. took carbs apart dipped each one, new o-rings,throughout, including intakes, intakes all looked good and had been replaced by p/o.

2. New stator

3. Adjusted valves

4. New plugs

5. Sync carbs
