Well, I must be getting old. I just put on my brand new Vance & Hines 4 into 1 Megaphone setup on my '79 GS850. The fit and finish is very fine and I don't mind the looks either. I just got back from a 50 mile ride and it's just too loud for my taste. I've been reading where several here have attached canisters and the like but is there anything I can do with the baffle to take this thing down a decibel or two? It's brand new and I don't want to start cutting it and modifying, fabricating etc. I see Dennis Kirk sells fiberglass repack kits and someone here also used steel wool to pack one. Has anyone had any success repacking to quiet it down and if so what did you do? Is there any quieter material that I should try? At 55 mph the 4k rpm drone note is just yucky (to me that is).

I've still got my very nice looking 4 into 1 Kerker in great condition - sitting in storage. I took it off because I didn't like the noise and replaced it with the stock pipes, which look just as good and sound a whole lot better while providing better mid-range torque. I don't believe in annoying others with unnecessary, obnoxious noise.

Loud pipes don't save lives, but alienate people who resent gratuitous noise pollution being thrust upon them.

When I first put my new V&H street megaphone on I hated it- too loud. Almost put the stock pipes back on. After about 400-500 miles, enjoying the extra power, it quieted down or I got used to it. Now I really like my V&Hs pipes.
Maybe give it some time before you mess with it. Im glad I did.

I'm going to try repacking it with some material I found on-line called Silent-Sport Premium. It was originally designed for dirt bike muffler applications but can be used for street. If that doesn't seem to quiet it to my liking, then I'm going to off the V&H and rig up new mufflers to the stock 4 into 2 setup or maybe a decent stock exhaust will pop up on ebay. I hate to wait too long though because our riding season here in the Adirondacks is rather short. The saying up here is "we have 10 months of winter and two months of bad sledding".

Do a plug check at your crusing speed to see if you are running too lean. The jardine I put on my 850 is still too loud, but it quieted down a little (to my ears anyway) when I got my carbs set right for the exhaust.

Pipes and mufflers

Cyg..

did you replace the mufflers on those pipes at one time or are they replacements?? Mine have a cross over under the motor (550 model '78) and recently had flame cutting 3/4 round the muffler.

my 79 850 came with a v&h w/no baffles, needless to say its insanly loud! i just got it running thanks to onchiman but cant ride w/pipes this loud, so can i buy baffles or should i buy a new exhaust?

Most, not all of the aftermarket exhaust systems can be re packed.
Jethro did a repack on his a few months ago.
He posted pics of how he did it.
Search thru the forum,I'm sure it's still around here.

Any decent auto shop should sell baffle material.
Some used steel wool, it will burn thru quickly, so don't bother.
Fiberglass insulation, same thing, don't bother.

Thanks for the info. Cyg is helping me out with some stockers. Since it's going to be my main touring bike I think I'll go with that quieter option. Anyone interested in a slightly used Vance & Hines 4 into 1 megaphone?

Hey Zombieeater send me a pm if you're interested. The system has a little over 50 miles on it, like new condition. $225 shipped I paid just over $300 for it.
