bigger fairing for my 83 GS750E??

Any ideas??

I need a bit more wind protection, the stock fairing on my 83 GS750E is a bit too skimpy for me. I'd mount the national cycle sport shield I have, but those darned handlebars on my bike won't allow for that.

I'd really like to keep the stock headlight/mounting points as is, but would be open to some minor fabrication ideas. I can't do too much fabrication, I don't have a welder and don't have any machining tools.

I'm really looking to set it up as a true sport tourer. I found some great bags and a sweet luggage rack that I've got all rigged up - I just need a beefier front fairing to complete the package. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for - something like the Bandit fairings or the fairings from the V-stroms.

Lowers aren't a big deal, I just want wind protection for my chest and head.

I rigged up a cafe fairing and a round headlight on my '83 awhile back. Better wind protection than stock, but not as much as a full S/T fairing. It did have a cool "cockpit" feel, though....


No fabrication required.

Cafe Fairing ~ $50 from nearly any moto shop
Universal headlight ears ~ $25 on eBay
7" round headlight - ~ $35 used on eBay


I actually modified the factory headlight ears to accept a round light, but it's easier to just buy the parts listed above.

An 1150 fairing will work too and uses the big 8" round headlight.

Quai, nice snag on that Yosh ignition cover you picked up. I used a sniping service to try to get it. Glad to see someone here got it.

If you do go this route, just make sure you're getting all the parts when you buy a used headlight. The bucket, the ring, and the bulb. Folks sell them individually all the time. And stay away from anything larger than a 7" headlight!! The 8" and 9" headlights (Ducati Monster, some GS's) are hard to fit fairings to, since most lights are/were 7 inchers.

I've got a garage steadily filling up with aftermarket goodies for the GS and my VFR - but no inclination to start wrenching

Especially the Ohlins part. I managed to get the Works shock from the Parts for Sale section here before anyone elso got it. My old shock was and has been scary for years. Never could be too sure how the back was going to react. Most of the time I just had to gas it and muscle the bike to make up for it. It finally bit me a few months back. Luckily very little harm was done.

There was an '83 ES for sale about 150 miles from the house a few weeks ago with a Fox twin-clicker. Asking price on the bike was about $600...

The wife couldn't understand that it would be worthwile for just the shock, and that I could make my money back by parting the thing out...


I think it's a sickness.

There are probably a few people here that feel the same way. The seller told me the first to make payment got the shock. He had a few others making inquiries. I figured I was already too late since I didn't see it posted until the next day. I sent the funds through PayPal on the spot.

The bike with the Fox would have definitely been worth it.

That looks AWESOME. I do like that company in the UK that you linked, but I can't really spend 300 or 400 bucks right now. They do have some damned sweet fairings though.

But anyhow, I think I might try the cafe look. I've got some Napolean Baren mirrors on right now - I think they're going to complement the cafe fairing well.

Billy - no need to appoligize man. Damned I wished I would've seen that Worx shock listing before I did. I can't believe he was only asking 150.

Have you thought of taking a fairing from another brand of bike and grafting it onto yours. I have been toying with the idea of taking an 81 or 82 Honda CBX fairing and grafting it onto one of my GS11s. I have two complete CBX fairings already and most of a third. I thought that I would try welding the proper suport bracketry onto the GS and set it up as a Supersport Tourer with Krauser-like knockoff bags. Just a thought. Good luck.

I'm trying to decide whether to go the cafe fairing route or try to find a used shield from one of the "ES" models. They come up a bit higher than my "E" shield, and I'm pretty sure it will fit the fairing.

Can anyone confirm that an ES shield will fit an E's fairing?

the absolute best made and best wind protection fairing available is made by hannigan.hanniganmotorcyclefairings.com is the site. i had one made for a yamaha once before.superb wind protection,workmanship and durability.$1000 buck though.rifle makes a great fairing you can see on one of the bike of the month a few months back, on a blue 850,it is only aobut $375.00

The ES windscreen won't fit on the E-model fairing - completely different shape.

But complete ES upper fairings come up on eBay fairly often.


If you're going to go the cafe-fairing route, you might want to look into changing your bars. The ~3" rise on the factory bars might get in the way of the cutouts in the fairing. I can't recall on mine - I swapped to clip-ons before I installed the fairing.

Any 37mm clip-ons will work - just make sure the bars themselves are long enough for your controls. I started with a pair of factory clip-ons from a Honda CBR600F Hurricane (F1) - they worked, but the bars were so short that the throttle grip would hang up on the bar end. I found a pair of fully adjustable Telefix clip-ons used on eBay for about $35.00 ($175.00 new), and just scored a pair of Daytona vintage clip-ons for about the same price.

Just thought I'd throw that out - check your bar height before you decide on a fairing. Fully adjustable clip-ons are great - you can go from cafe-crouch to touring posture in about 30 seconds with an allen wrench....
