A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I want to install pod air filters on my 83 Gs450A for the sole purpose of making more room for a larger battery. Do the carburetors have to be adjusted or modified?

Yes, they will need to be rejetted, a lot of trial and error to get it right..

Just curious, why do you want the larger battery?

Spekll czech suks.

I had a 750 Hondamatic with a Goldwing size battery, it would last 5 years without fail. I think extra capacity was why it would last that long.

It actually has nothing to do with it, except that it can be farther failed and still be able start the tiny engine….

Proper maintenance makes them last a long time too. Correct charging voltages, correct acid levels, clean connections, all of the usual electrical system stuff.

Changing ten batteries is a lot less work than rejetting it correctly.

What an exaggeration...........should be able to do it within 4 battery changes.

Seriously though, it's a PITA that should be avoided, or left for to the masochists among us.:-\\\

Not if he's going to get it to run perfectly. At a half hour a battery, that would only be five hours. Jetting takes longer than that unless you just slap in the nearest jet kit and are content with however it runs. Test runs, plug chops, it all takes time especially if you are not up to speed on which adjustment does what. For someone who doesn't even know that it needs to be jetted, multiply the time factor by about ten, and the chances of the running perfectly thing happening are slim.

Just buy an AGM of the proper size. They last at least 5 years and are maintenance free.

Hi Mr. Don Gaul,

Just buy an AGM of the proper size. They last at least 5 years and are maintenance free.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. Buying a good AGM battery and properly cleaning and maintaining your electrical system is much less hassle for a novice mechanic than properly re-jetting and tuning motorcycle carburetors.

Let me give you some S.W.A.G. for you to read and learn about the care and feeding of a 30 year old motorcycle. :)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

A decent ( NOT EL CHEEPO) AGM battery will be fine.

Now I'll just come right out and say it.

It's absurd to want a larger battery considering the time and effort let alone the parts required.

read my sig hahahah.

Too true................I thought you were being sarcastic and meaning ten battery lives to get the jetting right:)

From the sometimes condescending conversation, I was able to glean the information I needed to know. All is well with my GS. Thanks for the advice.

No, nothing "condescending" there, just trying to make you aware that jetting carbs is not all that easy.

"Wanting more battery capacity" is the first time we have seen that reason for wanting to put pods on a bike. With a properly-tuned engine, it will start virtually instantly. With a properly-working charging system, the battery will last for a while, too. Cheaper batteries might only go two or three years, better AGM batteries might go a few more. Especially considering trying to find a way to mount (and secure) a larger battery, I can't imagine that all the effort would be worth saving a battery change every few years.

Glad you got it sorted out, hope we didn't run you off.
