    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Carb choke ,change to old style?

Ive got an 83 gs650 that has the choke lever on the handlebars and want the old style right at the carb. I did a search and found this questions asked before but to no avail. Can someone that has the old style just tell me how it works, as far as what holds it open. The lever on the bars style just has detents in it to hold it. Also, how is it attached to the carb? Thanks for any help
 
It's the mechanical slide VM carbs that have the choke on the side of the carbs. The BS/CV's, like yours, typically have a cable operated choke. Not sure if there is an exception to this rule but I don't think so.
 
On the flat slide carbs on the 1986 GSXR750 they use a mechanical side pull choke that may be able to be adapted to your CV carbs. The flat slides have the choke plunger in a similar position (i.e. it pulls horizontal) and the long rod that actuates each plunger also sits in drilled holes in each carb which is also similar to our CV carbs.

Item #59 is the choke control knob adjacent to right hand side carb.

Also items #57 & #58 on the second carb from the right seem to control the position of the choke rod (whether it is fully on or partially activated).

Thanks for the replies. That diagram is interesting, any idea what holds the choke in place when you pull the knob out? The actual choke plungers on my carbs have springs in them so it has to be held out some way. Or maybe, didnt old lawnmowers have choke knobs?

Check my previous post and items #57 & #58 on second carb from the right.
 
I just changed the carbs on my GS1000 from the cable operated choke to lever-on-carb operated. The lever operated version holds the choke open using a spring loaded screw that puts friction on the side of the carb. Pretty simple design which I like better than the choke cable. The choke cable uses a similar principal on the GS1000, but the holding screw is in a different place.
 
Could we have some pics please? And where did you obtain the bits from for the conversion? What model? and year?

The central pull choke is held up when you turn the knob slightly. If you look the bar that comes out is shapped.
 
TTT just in case someone has more input. If not Ill post back when I figure something out.
 
for what its worth items 57 & 58 are simply a spring and a ball bearing. From memory i believe there is also a indent in the actual rod at that point as well for the choke to be kept in the "off" position without accidentally being activated by vibration. I think a past owner of my bike also managed to loose that ball bearing & spring :rolleyes:.

There are also indents in the rod for the retaining lugs (part #73, they had a flat head screw cut directly into the top of the lug instead of a normal screw head, and that was made of cheese ) that screw through the choke pullers (part #64, for lack of a better description) so that they are all pulled out equally and again so they don't vibrate out. I had to drill my lugs out and replaced then with a small 4mm bolt that had the end of the thread filed down to a dull 2-3mm point to fit in the recess on the rod.

Thanks Mike. That makes sense now.

All we need now is for someone to see if this modification can be made to work on the older CV carbs as the particular choke mechanism in the picture is from a GSXR Suzuki.
