A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anyone know how hard or easy it is to find a servicable CDI for an 84 GS550EF... and possibly where to find one?

Cheers

Quick answer is good luck. They seem VERY fragile to extra voltage from a bad R/R.

That is cheap so if you need one grab it but be warned it may not work or burn out quickly when in your bike. As mentioned, they are extremely sensitive to voltage and it seems the 550 is known for putting out over voltages that burn them up and or partially knock them out. I have seen an igniter not work in one bike but work fine in another.

While there are no direct plug ins of other igniters from the GS range, I did "invent" the swap of an '83 and up 750 igniter and its pick up coils in a tutorial known as "the igniter interchange project" which should be in the archives ( about 3 to 4 years back). I have the tutorial in pdf format if you want it. Just pm me. Igniters from these models are more plentiful and more robust but note that is not just a plug in but requires the pick up coils from the 750 along with some reengineering of the pickup plate.

There are also a couple of aftermarket solutions, one from Europe and one from New Zealand if memory serves. I think they are somewhere in the $250+ range.

Its a shame that these igniters are so frail as there are many otherwise good 550s sidelined for want of one.

It goes without saying that it behooves you and any other 550 owner to check the state of charging of your bike as previously mentioned they are know for overcharging.

good luck.

I have 70 000 plus kms on my bike and have gone through three regulator rectifiers. Still on the original Igniter. I bought a couple extra ones on ebay for cheap and they both work fine. The bike is a piece of scrap metal with out one.

99 bucks is cheap. I think another member on here is parting out a 550.
