A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

coil relay mod

You don;t have to clean the kill switch contacts or the ignition switch contacts.

Many riders like the idea of sending 12 volts straight to the coils from the nearby battery rather than let the power go through the above switches and a few connectors. These parts get corroded and drop the voltage. The best solution is to fix these problems rather than bandaid them since these problems can affect other areas as well, such as lights and blinkers.

Some have reported the relays going bad prematurely, stranding the rider.

As duaneage mentioned, the primary purpose for the mod is to ensure full battery voltage at the coils. Due to corroded connections, it is entirely possible to see only about 10 or 11 volts at the coil terminal when the bike is running. However, when you start the bike, voltage can drop to 8 or so, and the bike just will not run under those circumstances. By doing the mod, whatevery you have available at the battery is what will be delivered to the coils. You can use the corroded connections with the reduced voltage to adequately trigger the coils, so it is really a rather easy mod to do.

It is also relatively easy to clean the associated connectors that can cause the problem. There are good reasons to use relays, working around problems with corrosion does not seem to be one of them to me.

Search for the phrase Coil Relay Mod and you can find the diagram and complete instructions on wiring it. I understand some bikes run better with it.

For all of the reasons above, and to resolve the matter of the longer length marginally sized wire in the original harness which also causes a voltage drop.

Talking from recent experience. Mine started well before the mod but starts even quicker now, especially when cold or after extended periods of not being run. FWIW, I cleaned every connector and switch in the circuit before installing the relay. My hope was to avoid installing the relay. The new wiring, with relay, definitely improved the start-ability. Just my .02 worth.

If you have good voltage at the coil there isnt any advantage to it. Not a one of my Z1's or KZ1000s did. As far as leaving you stranded a simple jumper wire with alligator clips in the tool pouch will get you home.

I keep a spare relay on my bike in case some thing goes wrong. 10k Km's and no problems with my $5 relay so far.

I am going to test voltage and see what i got, starts up just fine but If its better set up will do the mod.Do you use spade connectors or a plug of some sort
