A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Coil voltage low

I'm putting my bike back together and getting ready to fire it up. Right now it won't turn over. It's reading 10.25 volts at the coils and a little over 12 at the battery. Would this drop be enough for it to crank forever and not fire? I was planning on doing the coil relay mod, but I'm testing out everything first. Thanks!

coil relay mod has nothing to do with the motor turning over....

but it sounds like your motor is turning over but not starting....

you need air, gas, and spark, so verify you have all 3

.

My GS1100E which fires and runs perfectly would only start with starter fluid when it has 10.5V on aftermarket Accel coils.

When you crank it probably goes much lower than that.

Yes the motor turns over but it will not start. It has fuel as well as air.

I would check that. If its 10.5 with the key on (headlight too ?) It will probably drop much lower when cranking. Wont start like that. Got a good battery ?

This new to you motor might need some coaxing to revive it. Make sure "choke" is operating fully at carb end- after a bit of cranking with FULL choke, plugs will appear slightly wet. If not ,make sure petcock is filling carbs on prime spot and the throttle cable and/or idle stop screw is not holding the throttle plates open (this defeats purpose of enrichment system)
With an old battery, my coil and battery voltages were similar to yours , but it still started- some ignitors are more sensitive then others to low voltage.

My bike would not start with it's electronic ignition with 10.5V. It would be a good time to go through the electrical system and clean or replace any heat or corrosion damaged electrical connections in the harness. All switches, grounds and connections in the headlight need attention also. Take a look at the fuse box too. Use dielectric grease to protect the connections from moisture and corrosion. Then try to get it running. This is a good source for connectors and proper crimping tools. (Since it was mentioned, starting fluid if it has ether in it will absolutely scrub all the oil off of your cylinder walls and should never be used on anything with small cylinders.) http://www.vintageconnections.com/

I have seen this warning before and have therefore been cautious. The can I used is called Pryroil "Starting Fluid". It claims to have an upper cylinder lubricant.

I never shot it directly into a cylinder and only gave a couple of 1/4 sec puffs into a pod which did the trick to get it to fire. :o

Not saying this is a good thing just perhaps not as bad as you might have imagined.

How To Use
For fast, easy starting, spray Pyroil? Starting Fluid into the air intake for 2-3 seconds (no more than 3 seconds), then start the engine. Besides cars and trucks, Pyroil? Starting Fluid works great on lawn mowers, trimmers, chain saws, motorcycles, etc. Note: product is extremely flammable and contains ethyl ester and petroleum distillates.
