creating a fairing part homemade

does anyone have experience in molding plastics? I need to create a headlight bezel to cover the exposed area around my factory square headlamp installed in the windjammer III fairing. ( you know like how do you fill spaces leftover from putting the square in the round hole syndrome :wink: )

Don can you post a picture of how it looks now, so I can get a better idea of what you are trying to fill. ( with the head light in place) Windjammer fairings are constructed out of ABS plastic so you should be able to pick up a piece of sheet ABS to use as filler. If you carefully heat it with a butane torch you should be able to soften it enough to mold it into the shape you want. Your local auto parts store should have a 2part epoxy glue that will bond most plastics.

Don, I see what you mean about filling in the gaps. With that style of fairing you're going to have a lot of shaping and fill work to make it look right. Wouldn't a simpler option be just to install an 8 inch round headlight system in the hole. I think I have a complete one kicking around in the garage, I'd have to double check to make sure. But if I still have it, it's your's for shipping if you're interested.
Silverhorse, I'm not sure where you'd buy sheet ABS, but a friend of mine picked up a couple of sheets last year. I can check with him as to what kind of store carries it.

yeah I'd be interested in where to purchase ABS as well. I like the look of the square lamp much better, ( doesn't have that cop bike look). I'm actually still trying to find a pichler or hannigan style for pennies on the dollar.

Don do you have a boat dealership near you? there are various types of fill materials including light weight fiberglasses that are used in boat modifications and repairs that might work for your need. However I would recommend having them suggest someone you could take it to to do the work if you have never worked in it before. The time and money you spend will make all the difference in the outcome. Just a thought.

Don I found a place that sells plastic sheeting...it is called Industrial Plastics up here in Canada. I talked to the guy and he recommended acrylic sheet for my speedo housing. It bends easily using a small butane torch and the project was quite easy. It would also bend if you put it over a mold and into the oven.
Check it out for your bezel...it's way cleaner and easier than fiberglass to work with... and you can glue it.

Hi guys I'm new to the site here BUT I have a ton of old plastic sitting in my backyard.
I Will do some form of a inventory to see what I have for the GS series.
Most of the stuff I have are what people refer to as (painters)
Some have some cracks in them other pieces have scrapes and some pieces are in useable shape unless your picky.
I will gladly sell the pieces for a symbolic fee $10.00 a piuece +shipping.
I don't have any gas tanks for them.
I also have a question to you guys I have a full GS550 fairing will that fit on my 83GS750 D ?

I would think you can make the 550 fairing work. You may have to fabricate some of the stays but it's woth a shot. I have an 1150 fairing to mount on my 700 one of these days. Looks like it will go straight on.

with all that I've seen the 550-1150 fairings were similar and about the same width across the tank. adjustments to the frame stays should be all thats needed.
