    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

is it necesary to take all the valves out to clean the head?


i have a feeling this is a stupid question:roll:

Not a stupid question at all. If you are not showing signs of a stuck valve, I would not remove the valves. I would just get a soft metal brush (brass) and remove the carbon from the combustion chamber and valve surfaces. Use a small screwdrive or scribe to lightly clean around the valves. Make sure that you remove as much carbon as possible and do not leave any as it will have a tendency to heat up and cause pinging.

If you have a ton of miles on the bike you may just want to have a valve job done...I suggest you take it to a shop to have this done as it requires a lot of special tools.

Alot of people may disagree But having to go thru all of the work and expense of removing the head I would have a valve job done. Other wise you are only doing half the job.
 
Gaskets are exprensive, so I would do what work is needed when the head is off. If it all seems great, at least replace the valve stem seals. I think mine have hardened with age and a few periods when the bike was off the road.

Hap, thnks for the advice/...my #4 cylinder was pinging quite badly whe under a load, and i thought it was a carb problem, and when i took the head off, the #4 cyl. had lots of carbon build up. the enging has 35,000 miles on it, and i cant believe it runs as good as it does!!!

I got a topend gasket kit for 15 dollars off ebay!!!! :D :D :D
