A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Discolored pipes

A while back, I started up my bike with the choke on and went into the house while it warmed up. I was in the house too long because when I came out, the rpms were up and the pipes had discolored. Did I read correctly somewhere that vinegar will clean them and take the discoloration away? I would've tried it by now, but the only vinegar I have in the house is already mixed with oil and will be part of the next salad I prepare. If vinegar doesn't work, is there anything else? Thanks.

For your pipes

For your pipes

Hi Mr. slowride,

The stuff that works the best is Blue Job.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

haven't tried the blue job but in my experience if the discoloration is too great there isn't a way to remove it (the blue on the surface goes deeper in the chrome and becomes yellow-ish or silver-ish but without the deep chrome shine)
in your case however it sounds only like a minor discolouration
it also depends weather your headers are single- or double-skinned (easier to overheat single-skinned)

Thanks, I have no idea if the pipes are single or double skinned (stock pipes on my bike).

BassCliff, Thanks for the tip. I may be purchasing some of that stuff tomorrow.

Ed

stock pipes are double-skinned (good news)
and if that's the ONLY blueing you got, you should be able to polish it off :-D

I bought some to clean the pipes on my son's Intruder, but he objected because he likes the colors. So we left them alone. What makes the colors anyway?

I've never found anything that will get it off. I've tried most everything, except vinigar. The 2 that have worked best for me, were Never Dull & Blue Away ( may be the same as Blue Job). The more you rub, the better it gets. My experience, at best the blue will turn to gold. Not "GOLD", but gold color.

Thanks psyguy, you've given me hope.

Ed
a friend of my bought a NEW intruder a few years back, after saving money for quite some time. he took it out from his garage for the first time, parked it just in front and left it to warm up. he went back to his garage to pick up his gear. hearing some loud noise outside he turned around - to find his bike had fallen off the sidestand onto the ground!!!

(yes, it was on a flat surface and yes the side stand was fully engaged...)

it takes so little to have the damage done, doesn't it?

good luck

I picked up some Blue Job today (at the local Harley shop) and tried it out. The pipes are better but still a little blue. I did the entire pipe (on the right side) and I have to admit, I can't remember when it looked that good. I'll make another attempt on another day at the blue part.

I've tried everything. Blue Job is the only thing that worked for me. But you have to REALLY work at it....rub, rub, rub. Here's a before and after:

Renobruce, That's my motivation. Nice clean up job!! I'll have to get my jar of elbow grease out for my next attempt. I probably wasn't rubbing that hard today. Thanks for the advice.

sorry to highjack and i may have asked this already but where did you get your fork brace renobruce?

One of the guys on the CBXWorld website had good results with 3M Marine Aluminium Restorer and Polish.
Oh yeah, LOTS of rubbing.

Is Blue Job a little more effective if the pipes are warm? The directions say to warm up the bike then let the pipes cool down. It's too cold in the garage today anyway to work on them and I don't feel like getting the heater out. I'll wait for another day. I'll have to take pictures though especially if they turn out as nice as renobruce's did.
