Do Emgo Pod filters need to be cleaned?

I'm wondering this because with the pods off and engine at idle, the exhaust seems to smell great. Like my car exhaust.
But when I put the pods on...it gets all rich and starts acting stupid on me.

Advice? Answers?

A clean air clener is always better than a dirty one...I dont have first hand experience with that brand. Be sure you can clean them...Your bike sounds like its rich with pods on...too much fuel, not enough air...naturally pods off= more air...Advice...clean em, see if it helps, then check carbs/jetting. Be sure your bike is in good tune before ya fool with the carbs...good plugs, valves adjusted, timing set.

Just use air and a brush of some sort. The emgos are not washable like the K&N

Are you using the oiled foam type? You could have too much oil on them. I used Emgo foam pod filters years ago, the only good way I found to clean them was to soak them in gasoline. Either way they were a mess to clean and oil- I went to the paper V+H filters and like them much better. I think they flow much better also. Good Luck, Ed.

Well, it appears that the pods are not my problem. It's the carbs. They are too damn rich...again.

I'm going to reset them to the specs that they were at when they were set up to work with the stock exhaust and see how it does (IE: 122.5 Mikuni mains, 1 turn out on the mix screws)

i haven't officially cleaned my Emgo's ever...and they're about a year old now. I figure a good soak and air-blow might be good for them.

at $9 a piece they are a lot more reasonable to replace than K&N's if you must. :)

The carbs seem to run better now after I cleaned the pods and set the mix screws at (1/2 + 1\2 of 1\4) turns out. (I suck at math/fractions).

No more hesitation but the exhaust still reeks of gas. Burns my eyes at stoplights.

Will changing to smaller mains fix that?

:?
I'm getting closer

have you run the bike without the filters on at all? you should be fine if you ride it for a couple miles on some hwy way or sumtin where it isn't to dirty, i would like to know if your problems go away.
like the exhaust smelling to rich and hesitation and stuff like that.

like i have said my bike carbs sucked until i changed to k and n filters all the other kind would not let enough air in. this is just my observation not a fact.

Well, I guess I'll start saving up and streching my anus for when I go to K&N. Grumble...grumble.
I had a feeling these emgo pods were not the best thing for my bike.

I rode the bike without the filters the other morning but it seems that I corrected the problems. Kinda. Still stinks to hell of gasoline from the exhaust while riding but it's almost tolerable. I think switching to a smaller main jet will help with that problem. If not it will at least get my "65 miles per tank" problem under wraps.

:(

you can't swap to pods and not do any carb work. you are proof that you need to really spend the time to make the job turn out best.

My suzuki-dealer warned me about cheap airfilters. He said the CV-carb is very sensitive and will not work properly with cheap filters. Is there any truth in that? Or is he only afraid that he will end up spending the whole winter tuning it?

I already spent the whole winter tuning this thing lol.
But it's almost done now. Just a swap back to the 122.5 mains and all is good. I can finally ride.

There are other options, SuperPro air filters are relabeled K&N's, and if memory serves cost about $60 for a set of 4. Also keep an eye on eBay, I picked up a set of 4 K&Ns for $50, used of course, but just clean, reoil and you're good to go.[/url]

Ah ha!! Thanks Luke!
Since I fixed the problem with the carbs myself and now have a perfectly running bike I can spend that money on the new air filters.
Thank you very much for the info.

hey Detman check these out, I'm not sure what flavor they are K&N or what, I havn't paid much attention to the aftermarket filters. I'm sticking with the stock airbox and filter, so I don't have to rejet. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2484604155&category=35597*Edit* Detman I just went back to ebay and noticed he is selling them individually (as 4 listed as available). Just thought I would give you a heads up incase you didn't notice it.
