Drive shaft lube change.

Hi, just want to be sure I do this right, can't get to the manuals at the moment. Drained the secondary drive & rear hub of stinky gear lube. When refilling, do I leave the 1981 GS850G on side stand to set both levels, on the center stand for both or is it different for each?

Center stand for both.


The following image may prove helpful; a lot of people mistakenly overfill the secondary drive gear oil the first time around.

Drain, replace drain plug, remove level plug and fill plug, and fill slowly only until oil starts coming out the level plug. Wait until it mostly stops dripping (yes, this is messy; aluminum foil is one good way to make a temporary drip guide to keep it off the exhaust), then replace fill and level plugs.

Thanks for that quick reply. Actually my question had to do with which stand the bike should be on when setting the level of each chamber. In past, working on many brands/models, I had to always look this up rather than remember,....or try to at least.

I think the secondary drive box would be done on center stand. It looks like that in your pic. Somehow I think the rear drive is done on the side stand tho.

That pic is just a dead engine on a workbench, but yes, the bike should be on the centerstand for both gear oil changes.

The centerstand should be used for all fluid changes and checks, actually.

Thanks. I found my Haynes manual, they failed to mention this detail in the section on changing the fluids so I wrote it in. When I find the Suzuki Shop manual I will check that as well to see if it is in there.
