DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi all, 1979 gs425e 15,000 kms. electric start doesn't work. no sound whatsoever. button and spring behind button as well as contacts cleaned and seem to be o.k. Is there a fuse inline hiding somewhere?
thanks karl

Yes

Yes

Hey, Karl, there's a 10 amp ignition fuse...that's probably the problem. Find your fuse box (probably on the left side under the side cover) and it will be labeled. If you replace it and it blows right away, that will mean you've got another problem. I suspect if you replace the fuse, it will work out just fine.

thanx I'll check this out pdq. as soon a s the torrent of rain lets up outside....sigh.....

Without conferring with my wiring diagram, I'd take a stab at the starter relay. They tend to short circuit after many years. My 450's did.

I don't know about the 425 exactly, but if it's like the 450, there is only one fuse on the whole bike and it protects the starter button and half of the starter relay ("solenoid") but not the starter motor. So there is no ignition fuse.

If I were troubleshooting your bike, I'd pay careful attention to exactly what happens when you hit the starter button. Is there a dimming of other lights, even slightly? That indicates a possible short circuit. Does absolutely nothing happen? That's an indication of an open circuit.

hey gang, I got the starter going. Thanks for all the help. There was a fuse 15a under the seat that was blown but I believe this was not directly linked to the starter. It was weird, with the blown fuse in place all the electrics (except starter) worked. When removed the entire bike was dead. I replaced the fuse and all the electrics worked again. (except the starter).

I took apart the starter button assembly and recleaned all the contacts with fine grit sand paper. and low and behold it worked. The only question is why the heck didn't I do this 2 years ago. would have saved an awful lot of kicking.
