DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just trying to adj to Suzuki thought process on electrical. Maybe its a real "street" bike thing in general I don't know. I have until now always had 1 lung thumpers mostly Honda. So here goes correct me if I am wrong. This is not a in depth break down just the basic operation if you will.

Stator and RR take care of battery charging light running duty. No Ignition pole on stator. Power to ignitor is DC from battery?

Ignitor is basically you CDI if you will runs/charges coils and trigger tells the when to go?

This might seem like dumb questions, but I have to understand basic operations of things so I can trouble shoot. I always start with the simple stuff and work from one end of a system. Just have to have a understanding of said systems first.

Weak spark no run situation on the project bike.

Thanks Chris

Why not just use the troubleshooting procedure in the Suzuki Service Manual?

Find one here:

Your outline is mostly OK, except figure the signal generator is like the points, it sets the timing of the spark. It only makes a tiny signal at the right time, so the ignitor is used, it's like an amplifier which makes this tiny signal big enough to operate the coil. There is no CDI at all.

So its a fancy points ignition with its own power supply outside of the stator. I get the trigger is basically points thing.

Thanks Chris

Yes Yes Yes

Yes

You said weak spark.
Check voltage at the coils (org/grn wire).
Power to the coil is from the ignition fuse, which if from the ignition switch, which is from the main fuse which is from the battery... and a few connectors along the way.

Also suspect maybe the spark plug caps. THe caps can be twisted pulled off the wires. THey have resisitors in them, the caps are suppose to be 5000 ohms (5K) each, but go lot higher over time and usage.

Also check the battery voltage while cranking the starter.

The magnetic trigger on the crank and the ignitor (together) are basically just electronic points. The "power supply" for the coils is just what is supplied by the battery and/or the stator and R/R combination.

It's really not much more complicated than a street-going thumper. The emphasis here is "street-going". Bikes that have a battery for the ignition and possibly an electric starter. The battery supplies current that turns the coils into electromagnets. When the points interrupt that current, the collapsing magnetic field sends current through the high-voltage windings to the spark plugs. On our bikes, instead of mechanical points, you have a magnetic trigger that sends a pulse to the ignitor, which is just an amplifier, as tkent said, and its transistors interrupt the current to the coils. No magic. No CDI.

Thanks for the imput fellas. Makes sense to me. Also thanks for link to the manual! I got the part I need printed out. Thing is gonna be a project for sure.
