    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Eletrical Parts Replacement Clarification - 82 850g

Hello all.

I'm slowly rebuilding a 82 GS850G and giving it all the goods I can.

Cleaned carbs, new o-rings, rejet for PO-installed 4:1, intake boots and rings, seal air box, valve shims, real gaskets, progressive rears.
Progressive fronts need to be installed. Waiting on Earl's brake lines parts to build those too.

Bought a new OEM petcock, going to get a pingle instead I think.

You get the idea -- really trying to do my homework and make everything right.

So, on to the electrical:

I have an Electrosport RR and stator here.
Lots of melting at the yellow wires wires from the old RR.
Had dead battery issues when the bike was left parked for a few days.

I've read that the spark plug caps can be questionable and may be desired to replace those for real cheap.
That is where things went crazy into reading about new coils, ignitions, relay mods, spark cables, etc.

I am not afraid to spend a sensible amount of money for piece of mind that it's brand new and will work for sure.
I'm sure I already have, and probably will replace even more perfectly functioning parts along the way; but I'd rather be safe than sorry.


The electrosport parts are going in, and will be cleaning/crimping/soldering[maybe] all sorts of connections along the way to make sure things are ok.

Can anyone talk some sense into me about the rest of the stuff.


'Picking' on Z1 since the site is easy to navigate and pull examples from.
Stuff I'm seeing, but not sure exactly what I need or should even consider:

Dyna coils, DC1-1 green 3 ohm (per manual 3-5 ohm system and your recommendation) (http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=210)

The Dyna part catalog seemed to point me towards this one, but the Z1 description has me worried:

Not sure which to really pick here.

So then I would still need the Caps too to got with those Dyna cables?

Should I still do that coil mod with all these things, or is that unnecessary?
I seem to recall reading something about if you replace some of these things, there is another device you can remove form the circuit as well. Sorry, can't re-find that thread to give any more info.

Just looking for someone to slap me around and point me in the right direction.

How many miles are on this bike of yours and why are you replacing the ignition components? Suzuki used high quality parts on these bikes and in many cases the aftermarket stuff is not as good as OE.

If you are hell bent on changing the ignition system you need to install a mechanical advance unit since your 1982 has the spark advance curve built into the ignitor. Something to consider.

Personally The wires from the stator to the reg I would solder them - No plugs to worry about. If you replace the coils with the green ones ? I would use the suppression wires, you don't need the plug caps, just the reg auto style ends. Unless you are having ign problems I would leave it alone. Coil relay mod would be good ! Clean the fuse block connections.

Thanks for the info and talking some sense into me
I'll tone down my super-replacement to just the sensible things and go from there.
I just wanted to make sure everything was 100% and didn't suffer from weak spark or who knows what.


Been a bad day -- just righty-tighty-ed my final drive drain screw out and broke the threads. Wondered why it was so hard to turn... sheesh. Had way too much going through my head and just was not thinking.

Pretty bad first impression, eh. :rolleyes:
