Has anyone tried these? They are as close to a stock muffler as I have found. I have some good-sized holes in the muffler on my '80 GS1000G and will need to replace them soon. I can't find a review of these anywhere.

These guys have a pretty large assortment with 'some' reviews.

When I searched around for 'almost stock' mufflers I found the Dunstall type to be the closest to stock look, they have them as well.

Looked great on my 79 850, I think there is a couple of photos of them on my 850 in my albums. Removable baffles which was great but those ones on particular where too loud. GREAT for more of a street rat type thing but for the quieter cruiser not so much. But there's got to be other Dunstall type mufflers out there that are quieter.

I like the look & sound of my OEM pipes. I'm not out for a performance increase, I like these bikes just as they are. I saw one review of a similar muffler on the link you provided, and it said it was a little louder. I may give them a try.

Although they look stock, they certainly don't sound stock.

Might be better on a bigger bike, but we had a pair of them on my son's first GS, an '81 450T.
They were not loud, just sounded a bit raspy, maybe even "puffy", sorta like an L.

.

my son has a set like that on his gs550. not to loud with fixed baffles, they look ok. we had to fit bigger jets in carbs. i think they were made in china.

I had a set of those on a cb350, louder than stock but not obnoxious, gave a nice tone. Kept them when i traded the bike.

I have a set on my 850 and they are loud and free flowing. I had to add a restrictor and some packing just to use them. The only baffel is a screen about half way down. I put some course steel wool up against that screen and a washer in the inlet. I had this same set on my BMW R80 for a while and they wern't too bad on there, but it had a pre-muffler.

I'll bet a dunstall style will be more to your liking.

PM me your phone # and I'll call ya and start mine up for ya to listen to.

I found a "scratch & dent" pair for $60, so I'll give them a try. I read a review for the Dunstalls and one person said he packed in some more material and they sounded good.

Thanks for the info guys.

Waiting to get my 78 1000 together to hear what the Dunstalls I'm going to be using sound like.Look great as far as I can see so far.

Hoping they aren't to loud, bit more than stock would be OK.Loud is not.

I've been doing some reading, and apparently people repack them. The choices are fiberglass, steel wool (including stainless), and ceramic. Looks like ceramic will be the best choice for durability and heat.

That system looks almost stock.

Yes it does, not bad for something that was included in a bike deal.Just 1 inch shorter than the stock one AZR had on his 78 1000.So happy I never sold them.

Just curious, aren't the 1000G mufflers welded to the head pipes (or is that just on my GL)? If so, where would you make the cut to remove the stock mufflers and how would you attach the Emgo or Dunstall?

Here's where I cut mine, right at the weld.

Had a friend weld 1 1/2" stubs on.

A close up.

Thanks. Did you just find a pipe (nipple) that fit tight and just drive it up into the header pipe? Oops, just saw the comment about your friends welding. Thanks again.

I bought a set of Emco reverse cone mufflers, for a BSA 650 I had a few years ago, that looked just like those ones. They were not a straight through design and were very quiet and restrictive.

I then bought a set of Dunstalls that were much more free flowing and gave me the performance I was wanting. They were also louder but not obnoxious. By straight through I mean that you could see through them. The only sound deadening was the through pipe had holes in it and wrapped with fibreglass. You could also take them apart to replace the fibreglass...which was handy. There was a restrictor part way down but I took that out right away.

It would be interesting to see how the Dunstalls would sound on a GS. Also if you would notice a performance increase.

My vote would be for the Dunstalls.

Talkinaboutshaft put pea shooters on his 850G. I saw it at the OC Vintage bike day show once. He did it without welding. He cut back the housing and clamped to the inner pipe. Haven't heard from him in a while.

Here is the thread

These "Dunstall" copies really don't look bad, but they definitely don't look much at all like the real thing.

I worked on this project some today. The Emgo mufflers are basically the same diameter as the pipe where I cut off the rusty muffler. I'm going to use a short 2" OD pipe to go over both pipes, weld it to the new muffler and then use a band clamp to hold the muffler to the pipe. The heat shield will cover this. I made an L shaped bracket and used 2 x 5/16 bolts in the slot on the new muffler. This way I can use the stock mounting point. Appearance is not too bad. I'll try & take some pics as I make more progess, I'm doing a few other things to it right now.

I found that what I needed were a pair of 1.75" straight pipes to mount the mufflers. Advance Auto had these, they are about 6" long. I ended up cutting about an inch off of each muffler and then about the same off the new pipes. I ground down the welds where I cut off the mufflers, and hammered the new pipe in place. Pushing the new muffler into place, it makes a decent seal w/o a clamp. The stock heat shield will just about cover the 1.75" pipe. I need to find some 1.75" band clamps to finish up the job.

EDIT
Make that 1.87" Accuseal clamps. I found them at Verocious Motorsports for about $5 each in aluminized steel, and under $8 each in stainless. Shipping was reasonable at around $10. I've dealt with them on some car turbo projects and they are a reliable vendor. I'm having second thoughts as to cutting down the muffler. Basically I trimmed it back about 1/2" so the slot in the side of it is gone. This leaves less "meat" to clamp onto.

Here are some pics. I have an MP3 sound file of idle and up to 4K RPM, and converted it to a WMV file- there is no picture. I had to do it this way since the forum won't accept sound files and Photobucket is photo/video only. It is an MP4 file on Photobucket.
