A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I want to increase the acceleration of my 81 gs1100 by putting on a larger rear or front sprocket, is there any other bikes that I could swap this off of? Also how many more teeth should I increase to? And what is the stock chain size?

I am not looking to change over to 530 chain, just want to swap the rear or front sprocket. I would prefer to go to a junk yard to get it and improve the take off without hurting the top end that much.

Thanks

Just go with a 14 tooth counter sprocket if your running a 15 tooth now.
With alittle luck you'll just need to adjust the rear wheel back alittle and be good to go. 20 bucks should do it for a 630 sprocket.

the countershaft sprockets are cheap new even. i also say one tooth less. it worked well for me even though i went to one tooth over after i did some mods.

So decreasing the front sprocket increases the take off power?

yes.

if you do go the junkyard mode, make sure it's not already worn out.
that will destroy your chain quickly, like as fast as you can accelerate.
new sprockets are chaep, I'd go new, no worries that way

You could always install a 1395 kit, g4 cams, 1150 head, 40mm lectrons, 14 front 46 rear and some very good hand grips and hold on \\:D/

Keep in mind every cause has an effect. When you favor a lower gear ratio (such as a smaller tooth count countershaft sprocket) you raise your cruising rpm's for a given speed. So if you were turning 5000 rpm's @ 65 mph, now you will be raising the rpm's to around 5500 rpm's for the same 65 mph speed (strictly a guess).

I am going the opposite route, as I want to gear for more subtile 75 mph cruise rpm's. I chose to drop my rear sprocket from a 42T to a 40T.

Now there is a case where raising the countershaft on toot((equal to almost three on the rear) would be very cost effective and also easy to undo if you did not like the results

Your right Scotty, doing the Superman thing can make it kinda of hard to slow down.

I remembered why you had to remake your seat. Re tell that story Jake. its funny and educational too:-D

And yes my children, because you can change your C/S sprocket, rear sprocket and even chain size and tensile strengths and even color, this once again proves that.....................................
